Extractions: WASHINGTON Las Vegan Andre Agassi beat Greg Rusedski in a three-set marathon 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (8) Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Agassi, the tournament's top seed and five-time champion, had four match points in the final set before a forehand volley by Rusedski in the tiebreaker's 18th point went wide and sent the pro-Agassi crowd, which weathered a two-hour rain delay, into hysterics. "To win it feels pretty special, but there is no question it could have gone either way tonight," Agassi said. "Just to be able to come back and play tomorrow, it's a pretty nice feeling. "I hung in there; I had to. (There were) two incredibly close tiebreakers that I was pretty fortunate to win."

The notes collected below are somewhat more vitriolic in criticism than the tone you will find in the fanclub weekly notes you normally see. Apr 8 (1998) Note-1 OK, here is another press report, from The Telegraph , Calcutta : " .. Leander cruised through 6-2, 6-2 and will next meet the winner of the Jerome Golmard-Wesley Whitehouse clash. In the process, the Indian No. 1 not only entered the second round of the tournament for the first time but also scored a point for his fellow-countryman, Prahlad Srinath and Syed Fazaluddin .. Both these young Davis Cuppers, who did duty in Genoa, could not have come here in time for the qualifying rounds and had asked for wild cards. Mahesh Bhupathi was granted one of the three on offer, but his team-mates were denied wild cards on the logic that they were not good enough to deserve such generosity .. Instead, IMG which owns the event in India obliged Phau simply because he was from Boris Beckers academy. It was left to Leander to reveal how ridiculous that decision had been

Extractions: an unofficial site It was a pretty ordinary effort on my part. Andre Agassi cruised in his opening-round match in the Salem Open today, breezing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Italy's Gianluca Pozzi. Agassi is in the tournament as a wild-card entry, but was seeded third. Second-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia was ousted in his first match by German Bernd Karbacher 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Rafter, the two-time defending U.S. Open champion, blamed his loss on poor serving in the hardcourt event. "It was a pretty ordinary effort on my part. The court conditions were very difficult and it was very hard to see the ball. I also found nothing on my serve," said a dejected Rafter.
