Kids Tennis," a nationwide tennis workshop for children between the ages of 3 and 10 which has been held 60 times already. She comments, "I started the workshop because I wanted to communicate to children what it is I learned through tennis. Today's kids face all sorts of problems - entrance exams, bullying, and crime to mention a few - but through sports they have the opportunity to grow as people, building their dreams, gaining confidence in themselves, and making some friends along the way." She adds, "I accepted the position of visiting professor for the same reasons. Even college students can learn a lot from sports. One thing I really want to let them know is that sports are a character-building activity. If I get a chance, I'd even like to do the kids tennis workshop in Amagasaki, too." Tennis player. Extractions: I lived in Amagasaki for three years when I was a high school student. Every day I spent almost all my time at the school, tennis court and dormitory. But I often went shopping at nearby "SunSun Town" in front of Hankyu Railway's Tsukaguchi Station. The best memory of my high school days is that I won three tennis championships: singles, doubles and team competition, at an inter-high school athletic competition when I was a third-year student. I began to think of turning pro when I was a second-year student living in Amagasaki. After deciding to do so, I was preoccupied with it. When the pre-graduation trip conflicted with a tennis tournament, I participated in the tournament because I had decided to become pro. Though the teacher advised me to join the pre-graduation trip, saying "You can participate in many tournaments from now on, but the pre-graduation trip is just one time," I chose the tournament after serious consideration. I don't regret that, but I now think there was some truth in what the teacher said.
