Paes, Bhupathi back for Davis Cup tie TENNIS NEW DELHI: Former world doubles champions Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who recently separated for the second time, will, most probably, play together in Indias Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I second round tie, to be held in Wellington from April 5 to 7. A win will give the team entry into the world group qualifying round. Theres no doubt about fielding them as our doubles pair (against New Zealand). But over a period of time, they will have to work it out. At least, prior to Davis Cup matches, which will be in the next stage, they will have to play some events together, Indias nonplaying captain Ramesh Krishnan was quoted as saying in news reports. Krishnan said he rated the duos chances of winning the doubles rubber against New Zealand high as they have had enough success together. Especially with reference to this particular tie, I feel they have played enough. Doubles is our strength and we should win that.
Extractions: Mirnyi, Bhupathi Move Through Friday, July 4, 2003 Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi earned a place in the Men's Doubles final with a four set victory over Leander Paes and David Rikl, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. The match between the respective number one and five seeds was always going to be interesting. A bit of extra spice was added by the fact that Bhupathi and Paes once formed a formidable partnership that saw them amass 22 ATP Tour titles, before a rift sent them to opposite sides of the net. In the first set, the first crisis point for Bhupathi and Mirnyi came in the eleventh game when they had to fight off a break point but they achieved that and took the set to a tiebreak. Mirnyi put a forehand out to give their opponents set point but that was saved by a fine smash from Bhupathi. But on a second set point, a forecourt volley from Paes gave him and Rikl the first set 7-6 (8-6) after 50 minutes.

Extractions: Leander and Bhupathi have done us proud by finishing as the No. 2 pair in the world last year and still we are not satisfied. For that matter even they are not! So the good news is that they will be going all-out for the No. 1 spot as well as hunt around for a grand slam title or two in 1999. Something tells me they are going to do it this year, now that the Jacco Eltingh and Paul Harrhuis partnership forced to part company. It is also heartening to note that Mahesh and Leander have finally a win over the pearless woodies under their belt. The Asia cup triumph and the good show at the Asian Games without the Leander histrionics shows that the second string has finally broken through. Syed Fazaluddin has shown promise and of course Prahlad Srinath is competing with the best that the Asian challenge has to offer. Syed Fazaluddin has been performing creditably in gaining some useful ATP points and will be a player to watch in the near future. The juniors too are progressing nicely. Especially Vijay Kannan who seems to be headed for bigger things in a couple of years if he continues to improve at the same rate as he has been doing now. The Kirtanes of Pune have shown signs of becoming the next hot doubles team in India as they swept titles at will on the satellite circuit in India in the latter part of 1998. But they have some way to go before they can think of matching the deeds of the premier doubles pair in India. They have to work hard to maintain their postion in the Indian team as the youngsters are threatening to take over the fourth and fifth spots. Overall our second string looks good and we can hope for a good future in tennis.

Krishna Bhupathi, father of Mahesh, said the Indian tennis pair Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi has a chance of winning a medal at the Olympics, provided they get into the top four seedings. In a chat with The Hindu here, Bhupathi (Sr), reacting to the Indian legend, Ramanathan Krishnan's doubts about the Indian pair, said: "First of all I wish to thank Mr. Krishnan for taking the pressure off the pair, because everybody had gone to town, with a heavy build about the chances of glory. So any, critical assessment, that too coming from someone like Krishnan is most welcome than loads of accolades." Mr. Bhupathi said though the Indian pair hasn't been playing together for quite some time now, except the Davis Cup ties, it is still in with a chance." I only hope that they find themselves in the top four seedings. I would be happy if the AITA represents to organising committee, citing their great Davis Cup record, if it helps them to get a seeding", said Mr. Bhupathi.
