Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - When the rivalry became too heated, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres went their separate ways in the water. Torres, left, and Thompson, right, couldn't catch gold medalist de Bruijn, center. The Olympics brought them back together for an uncomfortable detente: perched atop a circular podium barely big enough for one, bronze medals dangling from their necks. "All I can say is irony," Torres said Thursday. They tied for third in the 100-meter freestyle behind Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands, who won her second gold medal of the games, and Sweden's Therese Alshammar. Furiously stroking toward the finish, Thompson and Torres touched the wall together, popped their heads up and searched for the scoreboard. The time beside each name was the same: 54.43 seconds. "I just kind of looked up in shock," Torres said. "Then I started laughing when I saw Jenny and I had tied." The Tie stood out on a particularly flush day for the Americans in the pool four races, eight swimmers, eight medals.

Extractions: Holland's Inge de Bruijn added the women's 50m freestyle gold to her Sydney Olympic haul on Saturday, while America's Jenny Thompson picked up her eighth Olympic gold in women's 4x100m medley relay. With successes in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle already behind her, de Bruijn powered home over the shorter distance to beat Sweden's Therese Alshammar in to second while Dara Torres of the United States took the bronze. Her winning time of 24.32 secs was outside the world record mark she set in the semi-finals. Great Britain's Alison Sheppard finished seventh in 25.45 secs after making an excellent start. "I'm a little bit disappointed by my place and time, but even my best time would not have got a medal today," said Sheppard. "The experience of the whole thing has been amazing though and I tried to enjoy it today. I was going well for the first 25 metres but at the end I guess I just wasn't fast enough. "I've made an Olympic final and I've got to be happy with that. There was a lot more pressure in the final than the semi-final."

Extractions: Erik Vendt shattered the American record in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 14 minutes 59.11 seconds to wrap up the US Olympic Swimming trials in style. Vendt and Chris Thompson, runner-up in 15:09.16secs will now head to Sydney to take on Australian Grant Hackett in his own backyard at the 2000 Olympics. "It's two dreams come true at once," said Vendt, 19. "It feels great to win and set the American record in the same race. Erik Vendt "It's been my goal ever since I started swimming the mile when I was 12 years old." Vendt broke the previous national record of 15:01.51secs, set by George DiCarlo in 1984. He became the eighth-fastest performer ever in the event - second fastest this year behind Hackett and ahead of world record-holder Kieren Perkins of Australia. Vendt said he hoped his sub-15-minute time would give the US distance free-stylers a little more respect heading into the Games.

The United States swimmers capped an astounding performance in Sydney Saturday with gold medals and world record performances in the men's and women's 400-meter medley relay. The wins gave the U.S. team a total of 14 gold medals, cementing one of the strongest showings ever in an Olympic pool. Jenny Thompson earned her tenth career Olympic medal in the women's relay, and the American team of Thompson, Megan Quann, B.J. Bedford and Dara Torres obliterated the previous world mark by nearly three seconds, finishing in 3:58.30. Thompson now holds more swimming medals than any other woman, and her eighth gold means she's alone in second place among female Olympians in any category.

The physical and mental effect makes the swimmers feel as if they're sliding through the water much faster. Watch and Learn Here are some of the technical details the commentators may point out for each of the four strokes. Freestyle Body position: When Dara Torres came back after a seven-year break, one of her biggest obstacles was adapting to the "new" way of swimming freestyle. Nowadays, swimmers rotate their hips and look straight down. Why? The old way - keeping the water at forehead level - interrupts the flow of water and destroys the swimmer's torpedo-like posture. Jenny Thompson doesn't even look at the wall when she turns; she uses the cross on the bottom of the pool to tell her when to begin the somersault maneuver. Turns: It's also common for swimmers to come off a turn on their sides, and do a dolphin kick until taking their first stroke. This technique helps repel the water - and drag - away from the swimmer more efficiently. The swimmer must break the surface 15 meters from the wall.
