Extractions: Ian Crocker Sarah Wanezek Jonathan Linette Garrett Weber-Gale AUSTIN, Texas- The University of Texas men's swimming and diving team swept the Big 12 Conference postseason awards and the women's squad secured two honors, the league office announced this week. Senior Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) and junior Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) took home Swimmer of the Year honors while junior Jonathan Linette (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), freshman Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) and coaches Eddie Reese, Matt Scoggin, Jill Sterkel and Mike Walker also received awards. Overall, Crocker finished the meet with six All-America honors as he added a runner-up finish in the 50-meter freestyle and the 200-meter medley relay, while also competing on the 200-meter freestyle relay that placed sixth. Crocker wrapped up his NCAA career as a 10-time NCAA Champion and a 22-time NCAA All-American. His resume includes being a part of two teams that won national titles and he currently holds world records in six events including the 50-meter butterfly (long course), 100-meter butterfly (short and long course), the 100-meter freestyle (short course) and the 400-meter medley relay (short and long course). Wanezek's Big 12 Swimmer of the Year honor is the second of her career as she earned the same distinction last year. At the 2004 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, Wanezek earned four NCAA All-America honors and three NCAA All-America Honorable Mention awards, bringing her career tally to 11 and six, respectively. A native of Brookfield, Wis., Wanezek has won 12 Big 12 titles in the last three years, including six this past February when she won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

Extractions: Swimming sensation Pieter van den Hoogenband has completed a freestyle sprint double, and denied Alexander Popov a unique Olympic hat-trick. The Dutchman's comprehensive victory in the 100m freestyle final followed his success in the 200m earlier in the week. It also destroyed second-placed Popov's dreams of becoming the first man to win the title three consecutive times. Van den Hoogenband, who set a new world record in the semi-final, touched the wall almost four-tenths of a second ahead of a thrilling battle for the silver. Popov triumphed in that fight, just four-hundredths quicker than Gary Hall Jr of the US.
