Extractions: Moscow, April 6, 2002 Already a tradition in the major FINA competitions, the FINA Gala Dinner was again a privileged occasion to relax from the intensity of the competition, the work of the meetings and the challenges of the championships organisation. The FINA Family had the honour of inviting numerous political and sport personalities and awarded some of them in recognition for their effort in supporting FINA activities. Amongst those present at this occasion, a special mention is due to Alexander Popov, Vladimir Slanikov, Denis Pankratov, Dmitri Sautin, Mikhail Ivanov, Olga Sedakova or Alexei Akatiev, actual or former champions in the five FINA aquatic disciplines, but also representatives of the Russian authorities and a delegation from Fukuoka, site of the 9

When I flew the MiG-25, its engines had a total lifetime of 250 hours. DE: Is that mean-time-between-failure? Belenko: No, the engine is finished; it is scrapped. DE: You mean they pull it out and throw it away, not even overhauling it? Belenko: That is correct. Overhaul is too expensive. DE: That is absurdly low by free world standards. Extractions: Wrestler Alexander Karelin (left) has three gold medals to his name and looks to add a fourth in Sydney. Pascal Rondeau/Allsport MOSCOW (AP) There are few people in the world as intimidating as Russian Greco-Roman wrestler Alexander Karelin. At 130 kilograms (286 pounds), with a thick neck, giant forehead and sunken eyes, along with the enormous muscles coursing up his legs, arms and back, he is not a man you want to anger socially or competitively. Famous for a move in which he tosses his opponents over his head, three-time Olympic champion Karelin has never lost an international match and is one of the few athletes going into the Summer Olympics in Sydney all but guaranteed to win gold. Karelin is probably the biggest literally and figuratively of Russia's medal hopes. But the country has many more, and Moscow is predicting it will recapture the Olympic dominance its sportsmen and women and coaches enjoyed under the Soviet Union despite funding problems that mean many training facilities are crumbling or out of date.
