Extractions: 1999 MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONS They came, they fought, they conquered. With a third-place ranking going into the 1999 NCAA Championships, the Tigers went to the IU Natatorium on the prowl, looking to bring the NCAA title back to the Plains. Finishing second in 1998 in their home pool left a sour taste in the mouth of the Auburn men and made them hungry for victory. However, with no divers available, Auburn was going to have to fight for every point they earned. Having at least 39 teams and 250 athletes entered into the competition, AU knew that this would be no easy triumph. Head coach David Marsh believed the key to Auburns success would rely on the team leaders taking charge as well as the freshman stepping up to contribute to the team. Auburn made their presence known early as the Tigers swam a time of 1:16.50 in the 200 free relay during prelims, setting a U.S. Open, NCAA and NCAA meet record. That energy and enthusiasm set a pace that would catapult the Tigers through the rest of the meet. "On the first day, our goal wasnt necessarily to set a record. Time wasnt the issue, we just wanted to get our hand on the wall first and get our 40 points," team captain Aaron Ciarla said. "We were just focusing on one session at a time. We just went out gunning for it."

Extractions: 1998 NCAA AUBURN UNIVERSITY HOST March 24, 1998 Auburn Seeks to Defend Team Title over Top-Ranked Stanford Welcome to the 75th annual NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. This meet features some of the world's best athletes, including medalists from the 1998 World Championships, held in Perth, Australia, in January. Stanford has a slight edge over Auburn to win the team competition, though spirited swimming, backed by home town fans, may be enough to propel the Tigers to a repeat title. Stanford is led by World Championship veterans Tom Wilkens, a senior from New Jersey, and Steven Brown, a freshman from Reno, Nevada; and sprinter/flyer Sabir Muhammad, a senior from Atlanta. The Cardinal spooked Texas in a Halloween dual meet, 156-85, and turned in several superb performances in winning their 17th consecutive Pac Ten conference title earlier this month. The team has substantial strength in the distance events; Wilkens and Brown are the top two seeds in the 400 IM and Cardinals' Jeremy Kane and Matt O'Mara are scheduled to swim the final heat of the 1650 freestyle. Auburn's forte will be the sprints and the relays, which count double points under NCAA rules. Australian sprint sensation Brett Hawke was Auburn's lone individual winner (50 free) in last year's team victory. Hawke thrilled fans by producing a jaw-dropping 18.62 split on Auburn's NCAA record-setting 200 medley relay. This year, Auburn has three other sub-20 second 50 freestylers to back up the Aussie, sophomores Matt Busbee and Aaron Ciarla, and junior Brock Newman.
