Extractions: Alexander Popov gained a psychological edge over Australian training partner and rival Michael Klim, with victory in the 100m freestyle when they met at the Melbourne Grand Prix. The Russian Olympic and world champion clocked 49.59 seconds to beat Klim into second. But Popov downplayed the significance of the victory. "The real showdown will be in Sydney, this is just a warm-up," said the four-time Olympic gold medallist. Shave Klim said he was very pleased because he'd never broken 50 seconds unshaven and was not wearing a bodysuit. "We're just getting ready for the big one," he said. "I'll swim faster." In the 400m, Australia's Grant Hackett (3:51.14) beat teammates Kieren Perkins (3:52.92) and Daniel Kowalski (3:54.32) after world champion and world record-holder Ian Thorpe pulled out of the event. "I'm used to having Thorpey there on the way home so I probably didn't go to those extra couple of levels I could have gone," said Hackett.

Extractions: 13 February 1998 Vol 7 No 5 Splashing around in the Malvern City Baths as a child and throwing herself at breaking waves on the beach was fun but not really swimming in the eyes of 74-year-old Peg Hunt of Glen Iris. For several years, Peg had the desire but not the means to learn to swim until an old University of Melbourne Summer Programs booklet surfaced on her coffee table. "I'd wanted to learn for a long time. Then I saw the booklet so I rang up Melissa (Papworth, Physical Recreation Officer in the Sports Centre). She was very helpful and keen to have me here. So here I am." Peg has enrolled in a six-week learn to swim class offered by the Sports Centre as a part of the University's Summer Programs. Unfazed by the generation gap between herself and her fellow students, Peg is determined to be doing lengths of the pool with the technique - if not the speed - of Michael Klim. "I'm swimming. Not as far as the others, but I'll get there," she said. Back to the top

Extractions: The lure of the world championships in his home town is set to keep Olympic gold medallist Michael Klim in swimming until 2007. At the weekend, Melbourne won the right to host the next world titles after beating off bids from Rio De Janeiro and Dubai. "It is quite a bit of time away . . . the Commonwealth Games of 2006 was possibly going to be my last event, but it's certainly a great lure for me to continue and race on home soil again," Klim said. Unable to compete at this week's Barcelona world titles because of a shoulder injury and with a history of severe back ailments, Klim, who turns 26 next month, said competing at home was enough incentive to overcome any hurdle. "Sydney was fantastic and gave us a big boost and Perth, the last world championships [in Australia] in 1998 was a great event for me, so if I can multiply that a bit by having it in my backyard [it] is going to make it really special," he said.

Ecky Thump Having been away from swimming for some years, I was pleased to see that the ASA have become a little further engaged with that topic which in the past has been a source of fear, sweeping under the carpet, and despair. Child abuse in sport. They have, working with the NSPCC created 'SwimLine' a hot-line for disclosing incidents of child sex-abuse in swimming. A copy of the ASA's full note about SwimLine is enclosed below. Some years ago, I came across what was, by then, an historical incident locally. Some thought had already been given to how these matters should be dealt with, but I remember how, even as a professional working in these matters from time to time, it was difficult to get hold of the information I needed. It also became clear just how very difficult these things are to handle from everybody's point of view. Emotions rapidly put all objectivity at risk, and the people involved who might have responsibility for sorting things out have only limited things to do. In any event, I am pleased to say that things have moved on over the last few years.

Search Swimming Mind Training Tips for Swimmers by Craig Townsend #14 - Swimming well after being ill I am often asked is it possible to perform well in meets directly after coming off illness or injury? Judging from my experience with many swimmers, the answer is definitely yes. One of the very few 'benefits' a swimmer gets after being off sick for days, weeks or even months is that there if virtually zero expectation put upon them. The pressure is taken completely off because no-one (and possibly not even yourself) expects you to do well if you've missed lots of training and have been unwell. This makes it a lot easier to swim completely free of any tension which most of the other swimmers are experiencing . This puts you into a position of power, as you may actually go out and surprise a lot of people with a good swim. A sixteen year old State level swimmer came to see me who had been off training for 9 months with chronic fatigue syndrome, and he began a daily programme of

Extractions: Former 100 metres butterfly world record holder Michael Klim has missed selection for an individual event at the Athens Olympics after two failures at the Australian national championships on Friday. The 26-year-old won four golds at the 1998 world championships and broke the 100m-butterfly record three times. Klim cited an injury-interrupted preparation for her withdrawal from the national championships and decided to concentrate on the 50m freestyle. However, a seventh placing in the 50m freestyle means Klim has only qualified as a relay swimmer at the Athens Games in August. "Because of the limited amount of work we've been able to do, he can't sustain the butterfly," Klim's coach Ian Pope told reporters. Klim added: "I feel I've spent more time in hospital than I have in the training pool the last couple of years.
