The Communiqué issued at the end of that meeting stated that "Heads of Government reaffirmed their solidarity with Guyana in light of the continuing threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity by Venezuela." It further stated that, "In this context they regretted Guyana's inability to fully exploit all its natural resources in the Essequibo region in accordance with the Geneva Agreement." Both Guyana and Venezuela have been working to improve relations between the two countries. The Minister of External Relations of Venezuela HE Roy Chaderton Matos made a two-day visit to Guyana in April. The visit served to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries especially in the areas of functional and economic cooperation.

Extractions: 10:23 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 Less than 12 hours after Pasadena police fatally shot an armed suspect, a telephone rang at the local NAACP headquarters. It was Chief Bernard Melekian, calling to leave a message for NAACP President Joe Brown to relay the preliminary details. Those who know him say the call is typical of Chief Melekian's approach: crime-fighting zeal, a willingness to listen and a desire to seek systemic change. "I don't care where he is in the world, he will give me the facts he currently has" when there's a major incident, Mr. Brown said. " I don't always agree with the method employed by the police, but I can never say that I didn't know what was going on." People inside and outside the department say Chief Melekian has gained the community's respect while raising rank-and-file police morale. "He's open, honest and doesn't pull punches," said Merrick Bobb, a Los Angeles area-based expert on police accountability and president of the Police Assessment Resource Center.

As we watched the grand finale of Survivor: All-Stars recently, I could not help but be concerned. Certainly there were millions of viewers like ourselves anticipating who might walk away with the million dollars. After watching all season, the outcome was predictable. However, my concern is the message it conveys to our younger, more impressionable people. To lie, cheat, break solemn agreements and every other moral value imaginable and finally be rewarded with the "Big Prize" is not only entertaining but commendable. We were told that "It’s just a game" and "You played well." "Everyone in the group did or would have done the same if you hadn’t beat them to the punch." So, therefore, if you stab them often enough, you may win all the marbles. Perhaps a better lesson of life could be learned by watching other, gentler sports like golf or tennis. Glenn Bourland
