We had advanced to the semifinals of the tournament courtesy of a forfeit by "Logan Is Five One". The team was a bit overmatched versus Sigma Chi, although after falling behind 7-1 in the first half we pretty much held our own. Goals were scored by Tim Stone '01 (my old roommate), who scored on an amazing spin move, weaving through several SigChi defenders and whipping a no-look, backwards shot passed their gaolie, and myself. Bolton - odds-on favourites to finish this season relegated back into the First Division - tore one-time England manager Peter Taylor's woeful Foxes to shreds at Filbert Street. A first-half goal blitz saw Bolton 4-0 up at the break, with Kevin Nolan scoring the first goal of the new season with a header after just 15 minutes. Michael Ricketts doubled the visitors' tally on 33 minutes, holding off a challenge from Gary Rowett before slamming a an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Extractions: David Pleat, caretaker manager of Tottenham Hotspur since the dismissal of Glenn Hoddle in September, will remain in charge at least until the end of this season. Chris Hughton has been given similar assurances in his position as first-team coach. It is no surprise that Spurs are sticking with Pleat after his efforts over the past 12 matches, seven of which have been won and two drawn. Several big names have been linked with the vacancy but no serious moves have been made to secure an appointment. Daniel Levy, the club's chairman, told shareholders at the annual general meeting this week: "I am pleased to announce that David Pleat and Chris Hughton will continue in their current positions until the end of the season. "This will give the club the degree of continuity it needs until we make our most important managerial appointment."

Extractions: ROCHESTER, N.Y. (CP) - Corey Woolfolk scored his sixth goal of the season and the Rochester Raging Rhinos blanked the Toronto Lynx 2-0 Friday, extending the Lynx's losing streak to three games. Chris Carrieri opened the scoring for the Rhinos with a bicycle kick off a bouncing ball in the Lynx penalty area. MONTREAL (CP) - The Canadian under-19 women's soccer team can book its trip to Thailand. Hometown hero Veronique Maranda scored once and helped set up two more goals Friday as the Canadians earned a berth in the FIFA world championships this November with a convincing 4-0 win over Costa Rica in the semifinal of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. MONTREAL (CP) - Angie Woznuk had three first-half goals to lead the United States soccer team to a 6-0 win over Mexico in semifinal action at the women's under-19 CONCACAF world championship qualifying tournament. The victory assured the defending champion Americans of a spot in the world under-19 championships in Thailand in November. Veteran striker Kerri Hanks scored twice for the U.S. to run her tournament-leading total to nine goals. Midfielder Stephanie Kron also scored her third goal of the tournament for the U.S.

REFEREE: Pierluigi Pairetto (Italy). AUDIENCE: 76,684, Wembley, London. YELLOW CARDS: Ince, Shearer (England); Collins, Spencer, Hendry (Scotland). RED CARDS: NONE. The names might be misspelled. The responsibility for that is mine only. No sooner had the crowd stopped applausing David Seaman for the first penalty stopped in EC'96 than we've also seen the best goal of this tournament. Paul Gascoigne got a ball from Darren Anderton, raised the ball over Hendry with his left, cut to the right and shot from the air with his right, beating Andy Goram. 2:0, in a game disappointing me with the result, but by no means with the quality of play. This tournament has by now three important features - bad refereeing, a low number of goals and most of all, excellent keepers. Mihailov, Pascolo, Rustu, Schmeichel, Lama, Kouba, Ladic, Zubizarreta, Peruzzi, van der Sar... The two we saw yesterday were no exception. Andy Goram proved once more his superb skill, but above all, it was David Seaman, "The Man Of The Game".

Premiership Review Champions League slot, on goal difference ahead of Leeds and Ipswich after a hardfought but deserved victory at Valley Parade, with gary mcallister once again http://soccer-europe.com/Archives/Prem0001/Reviews/Prem36.html
Extractions: PREMIERSHIP ROUND 36 1 MAY 2001 30 APRIL 2001 Charlton (1) 2 (Svensson 12, Rufus 57) Ipswich (1) 1 (Reuser 20) Ipswich Town's Champions League aspirations took a severe dent tonight as they slipped up 2-1 at The Valley against Charlton, although a draw would perhaps have been a more accurate scoreline. Charlton took the lead early on when John Robinson's right wing cross was met brilliantly at the near post by Mathias Svensson whose near post header crashed into the back of the net. The equaliser followed eight minutes later when Martijn Reuser's clipped ball into the area somehow deceived everyone and bobbled apologetically into the bottom corner with Ilic grasping at thin air. The lead was regained in the second half when Ipswich failed to clear a free kick and as it fell to Graham Stuart at the far post, his half hit shot was helped past Richard Wright by Richard Rufus who was standing directly in front of the Ipswich keeper. Both clubs had further chances but there was no further addition to the scoreline. 28 APRIL 2001 Gary Dowden Chief Editor - Soccerage (UK) http://www.soccerage.com

Extractions: Setting: Football Champions is the first CCG to represent one of the biggest sports in the world: Football. No, not the one played in the United States. The one Americans refer to as Soccer, but everyone else on the planet calls Football. You know, I think if all of the countries could agree on just three things, we'd find world peace and harmony: one currency, one measurement system, and one game named football. Game Play: First off, thanks to Carlo Brozzo for getting a copy of this game for me. See, because 'soccer' isn't as big in the U.S. as it is in, well, most other countries, WotC has decided not to release FC in the United States. Brilliant, huh? Isolate a game from the largest CCG market in the world. Anyway, in FC you build a team of players to be your team. Each player has a point value, which represents the skills they have in various stats:Pace, Tackle, Shot, Skill, Header, Save and Penalty. In the basic form of the game, you don't use all of these, but it takes all of them to simulate the game. One of the few problems I have with this game is that it pretty much requires a playmat. The mat is a giant field, and you will position your players on it. It works out just fine, but it's still kind of annoying. Each player has a team of cards, plus a deck of strategy cards, dice and a ball token. Basically, the field mat is split into a big grid, and at the start of the game, each player has a player card in each square of the grid.
