Extractions: Sir Stanley Matthews: A legend passes Grazie, Turquia! Myers picks up the pieces in Italian rout Ankara - Turkish Daily News The first time I ever bunked off school to watch a TV soccer match it was because Stanley Matthews was playing. Now one of the greatest ever figures in the English game has passed away peacefully at age 85. In the drab world of a post-war Britain in which food was still rationed and jobs were scarce as the nation struggled for economic recovery, soccer was for many a form of escapism, a temporary release from the grim reality of their lives. Matthews was its finest exponent and by far its most popular figure. What made him great? Remarkable close ball control and an ability to send his marker spinning every which way with feints and sudden deceptive changes of pace. As with all the great players, there was a buzz of expectation whenever he received the ball. We cannot say his death marks the end of an era because the Matthews era is already long gone. It was the era of baggy shorts and standard-issue haircuts. Soccer then bore very little resemblance to the game as it is played now. Players were rigidly specialized and expected to perform only their own particular tasks.

Extractions: Subscriptions By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune MARSEILLE - Look very closely at the 704 players you may see at this World Cup. Ordinary fellows, you must agree. Two arms, two legs and blessed with gifts of varying degrees to move a ball around a turf field so that we can dream. Lucky guys, these athletes, born in the right time and place - and one of them born to be the man who strikes the golden goal of 1998. If he's French - say Zinedine Zidane - then no matter his impoverished upbringing or his foreign ancestry, he is in line to follow Michel Platini, honored with the title Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. If he's English - Alan Shearer or Michael Owen - he will be knighted. It might take a little time, but the Brits always get there. This weekend, just in time to instill the right spirit to the ''lads'' of '98, a former player, Geoff Hurst, is to be knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Hurst had one very special day. He scored the three goals that won the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley Stadium in London.

Coventry Web - Writers Corner - AN ECHO OF HEROES ' in the old North American soccer League when I was a correspondent for a popularmagazine. I played one which featured sir stanley matthews, who came to Los http://www.coventryweb.co.uk/editorials/writers/StanleyMatthews.html
Extractions: COV-WEB REPORTS It would have been September, 1942 when I first saw Coventry City play a wartime league match against Leicester City. Along with the three Webb brothers, John, Brian and Peter, neighbors whose home in King Street had been totally destroyed in the blitz, I caught the 1.57 pm Inner Circle bus outside the Rialto Casino in Moseley Avenue, which deposited us in Swan Lane and we made our way to a spot just to the left and behind the goal at the Nicholls Street end. The City won 5-1 that day and a lean, swarthy center forward called George Lowrie, who looked and moved like Brazils Romario of recent years, scored three. The pitch already hallowed ground in my eyes had a slight dip near the center line in front of the Highfield Road stand where a bomb crater had been filled in. We were totally thrilled by the game and Lowrie became an instant lifelong hero.
