Extractions: FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (September 30, 2001) Kansas City was haunted by two former Wizards on Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium, as Chris Henderson and Preki notched the Miami Fusion's goals in a series-clinching 2-1 Game Three victory in the quarterfinal round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. With the win, No. 1 seed Miami captured their first-ever "first-to-five-point" playoff series 6-3 and will meet the No. 5 seed San Jose Earthquakes in the semifinals. Henderson scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute, while Preki tallied a critical game-tying goal in the first half. Both had been members of Kansas City's MLS Cup Championship winning squad of a year ago, but were traded to Miami in two separate offseason deals as Wizards coach Bob Gansler looked to upgrade his team. After a tentative opening 10 minutes by both teams, the Wizards took a surprising 1-0 lead in the 13th minute courtesy of a towering header by forward Onandi Lowe. From the left flank, Wizards defender Mike Burns dribbled by Fusion midfielder Lazo Alavanja and created space for himself to send a measured cross into the Fusion penalty box. Relatively unchallenged, Lowe rose above the defense and cleanly nodded the ball past Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando and into the top left corner of the goal. Miami wasted little time in drawing even, knotting the score at 1-1 less than a minute later on a 25-yard shot by midfielder Preki. In the 14th minute, Miami's crafty attacker was the recipient of some good fortune, when his low, sharply driven freekick was deflected by the Wizards' defensive wall. The unpredictable redirection left Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola flat-footed as the ball found the right side of the net.

Extractions: An expensive marketing campaign treated the players like boxers; the likes of John 'the Juggler' Harkes and Roy 'Lights Out' Lassiter were given nicknames in a bid to broaden their box-office appeal. The MLS was part of the entertainment industry. And the entertainment was incomplete without a winner. So a shoot-out was introduced to decide matters if scores were level.

Extractions: CHICAGO People always ask me, "How come you write about sports?" I guess this is because I don't look much like a sports guy (whatever that is) in real life, but the truth is that I write about it, and soccer in particular, because it gives you a wonderful opportunity to write about things other than sports. I mention this because this time out, I'd like to talk about economics but don't panic, kids, because i'll ultimately tie this whole thing to soccer. Really. This weekend, while thumbing through the New Yorker, I came across an article about an obscure economist named Friedrich August von Hayek. A Nobel Prize winner, Hayek was almost willfully out of fashion his entire career, for proposing the idea in the late 1930s that free markets "were not just political constructs ... but remained the best way of coordinating scattered information." This of course, was at a time when welfare states were being erected across Europe and Russia, and Hayek's tracts came off as right-wing invective. Yet, today, most economists accept that capitalism remains the most efficient way to organize a society; the idea that a central planner can more skillfully control a system than allowing individual decision makers to allocate resources and labor has been discredited by the fall of socialism and communism.

COLUMNS AND FEATURES : SOCCER WATCH BY NICK BARBARO Austin's new pro soccer team, the Austin Posse , started with a bang Saturday evening, with a 3-1 win over what appeared to be a youth auxiliary of the Mexican first division Tigres. Rating [1-5] This video is great because it recaptures plays in important soccer games and records soccer history and styles of play that will become soccer history. I would love to see other unique games like the 1979 WORLD CUP with the Netherlands team (many of whom were killed in a terrible plane cash.) Their style of play was unique and was taught by one of the most innovative soccer coaches of that time.
Roy Lassiter: Goals Come In Bunches For United Player On The Move. United directory. roy lassiter goals come in bunches for United player on the move. By Gary Davidson. SoccerTimes. WASHINGTON, D.C. Extractions: SoccerTimes WASHINGTON, D.C. (Saturday, August 15, 1998) During his short tenure with D.C. United Roy Lassiter has scored goals in a variety of picturesque ways: with his left foot, his right foot, diving headers and even while lying on the ground. The reason Lassiter is such a prolific scores, however, seldom comes within the camera's eye. He is a tireless worker off the ball, wearing defenders down as he maneuvers to become an open target. Lassiter's prowess has never been more evident than in this week's CONCACAF Champions Cup in which he has scored six goals in two matches, propelling United to Sunday's 3 p.m. championship game against Toluca of Mexico. No goal was more indicative of Lassiter's first of two tallies in Friday night's 2-0 semifinal triumph over Leon of Mexico. He made it look easy, tapping Jaime Moreno's pass three yards into an empty net. But it was Lassiter's hard work to shed his marker - Hernan Crespo - as well as Moreno's tenacious work on the end line that made the play. It's the flow of the game, the game dictates what's going to happen," Lassiter said. "That's what I do. I'm a forward and I score goals. Things happen with movement. If I'm in a good spot, good position, I'll put the ball in the net . . . I guess during the course of the game, some defenders do lose track of you. Ninety minutes is a long time. They have to keep up with my movements. I don't have to keep up with theirs."
