Extractions: CSSC Arsenal won the U11 Premier Division of the 2004 Jamestown Cup Tounament during this Memorial Day Weekend. To earn the championship, CSSC Arsenal won 4 times in round robin play earning the full 12 possible points. For the tournament, CSSC Arsenal outscored their opponents, the CCYS Hornets from Dover, Del., Stafford Titans, Baystar Lasers, and ERSC Fortitude, by a total 15-2 tally. This tournament played the U11 Division in a 11 v. 11 format so having these three guest players provided Arsenal with enough players to have one sub available for the entire tournament. However, more so than that, their respective play truly blended well with a possession style of play that Coach Wallbank tries to instill into his Arsenal players. Now I've written on more than a few occasions that Illinois still has the most regressive soccer tournament structure of any major state in the nation. It's time for the IHSA to ease into the next progressive step to improve the quality of the high school state tournament. First of all, a casual review of the facts reflects that in nearly every sectional playoff bracket for the past three years (for both A and AA teams) the 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds, in fact, advanced to the semi-final round of the sectional playoffs. Now normally those results would be clear indication for most people to recognize that the IHSA should move to a four-division playoff to make things more sporting. After all, prep football in Illinois already plays in separate six divisions. It also follows the formula of conference champs and seeding points for the 32 teams in each of the six divisions. That means that only 192 of the 594 football teams make the state playoffs. Hhhmmm?
