Extractions: The first two weekends of MLS are now complete, and despite some exciting, high scoring games that would even make Paul Gardner, the perennial discontented columnist of Soccer America, happy, I am still filled with dismay. Many people have already commented on the despicable fact that Lockhart Stadium was barely half full for the arrival of Lothar Matthaeus and the rest of the MetroStars team. Here we have a renovated stadium tagged as being the ideal size for professional soccer in the U.S., and only 10,000 people are there to see one of the Worlds greatest players. Im starting to wonder if Manchester United or Barcelona would even be able to fill up Lockhart Stadium. Somehow, I kind of doubt it. But I also suspect that there is more to the troubles of the Leagues opening weekends. I think we all would like to see MLS in existence 10 years from now, though we may differ in the exact route the league must take. One thing is clear, however; in many ways the season has not gotten off on the right foot. While the play has been quite attractive, concern remains over attendence, visibility and the all-consuming issue of single entity and salaries!

Extractions: Virginia Beach The Virginia Beach Mariners signed Roy Lassiter for the 2003 A-League season shortly after he was waived by DC United. During his seven-year professional career, Lassiter has scored 88 goals in 179 regular-season games, which makes him the all-time leading scorer in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS). In addition to being the leagues all-time scorer, Lassiter holds the MLS record for most goals scored in a single season (27 in 1996). With 13 goals in 21 post-season appearances, the thirty-three year old also holds the all-time record for most goals scored in MLS playoff games. Team owner Mike Field said Roy Lassiter has been the best scorer in MLS since the league started in 1996, and remains a consummate box player with great instincts and tremendous physical talents. There are many brilliant technical players in both MLS and the A-League who we could have signed, but Lassiter scores goals and goals win games, Field added. Lassiter started his MLS career in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny. After playing 60 games and scoring 37 goals (including seven game-winners) for Tampa Bay, Lassiter was traded to DC United for Roy Wegerle in April 1998. Lassiter jump-started DC United's attack and ended the 1998 season as the club's leading scorer with 18 goals in 25 games. The following year, Lassiter returned as the teams leading scorer in the regular season, and then moved into the playoffs to score three goals and register the assist that won DC United the 1999 MLS championship.

Extractions: Roy Lassiter thought this was his time to show the world just how "bad" a soccer player he really was. "I was the typical arrogant soccer player who was excited about the opportunity to play with the US National Team," Lassiter says. "To make that team meant everything to me. Obviously, I didn't have God in my life at the time." He didn't have God and because of one brief moment during a training session he no longer had a chance with the National Team. Lassiter was tackled from behind during practice and suffered a broken left ankle. There would be more setbacks. For instance, his father left his mother while Roy was in training camp. "I was discouraged and did not handle my situation well," he says. "My father was gone. My brother was off at school, and my mother was faced with the pressures of running the house alone. I had no job and no stability. I was just sitting at home, lost and upset with the world." As he sat and allowed the hurt to fester into anger, Roy decided to take matters into his own hands. He figured, "I had nowhere to go, so I'll just do what I like." He embarked on a short career as a party personality, then he moved from constant partying to breaking-and-entering. Through observing his mother's commitment to the Lord, he noticed that her bad situation became better and he wanted to know why. He went to church with his mom and brother (who had also become a Christian) in November 1995, and it was then that he was convicted by the Holy Spirit and received Christ as his Savior.

Extractions: MLS directory WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, August 17, 2000) I've been scratching my head a lot these days over the collapse of D.C. United. Who could have imagined such a dramatic fall in form? While there are number of reasons to explain United's demise, I still feel the loss of striker Roy Lassiter was a major factor. How many times this season has the ball whizzed across an opponent's penalty area just needing a foot to put it away. "There goes another Lassiter goal," I found myself saying time and time again. D.C. United could not wait to send striker Roy Lassiter to Miami after winning MLS Cup '99, but the team could not replace his goal-scoring and now has the worst record in the league. With all his failings as a player, Lassiter had an instinct for scoring goals. Numbers don't lie. Lassiter=18 goals in 1999 (not to mention 11 assists). Albright=3 goals in 2000. While Lassiter missed a number of chances and his heading ability was suspect, he scored goals, and it's goals that win games. You can play all the pretty soccer you like and make 30 passes in a buildup, but if the ball doesn't reach the back of the net, youre not going to win. United general manager Kevin Payne said he had to trade Lassiter due to the salary cap, and I believe him. But why couldn't he have traded two or three second-tier players, such as A.J. Wood, Carey Talley or Geoff Aunger for

Extractions: (Monday, December 13, 1999) Boy! Major League Soccer champion D.C. United and its fans play tough off the field too! It seems I caused a bit of stink when recently on these pages I sympathized with Roy Lassiter, over his trade to the Miami Fusion from D.C. United. I felt like moving just in case my address got leaked. I received over 40 e-mails, including a note from Bruce Arena and a phone call from United general manger Kevin Payne. One United die-hard fan asked "What universe are you from?" and called my comments "extraterrestrial garbage". I loved that one. There's obviously a lot of astute fans out there and I was very impressed with most of the responses, but not those with the profanity and threats. The bulk of the mail criticized me, but I did get 13 positive e-mails. I also learned that if you want to know what the real fans are thinking it might be time to step out of the press box and jump into the "Screaming Eagles" or "Barra Brava" fan club sections at RFK Stadium. First I'd like to say that I'm a great admirer of D.C. United and in the last four years often praised the team to the hilt. I called Arena a "genius" once and was even criticized for saying that by people working for United if can you believe it.

Extractions: The 1999 Major League Soccer season comes to a close on Sunday, November 21, when the D.C. United take on the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Cup at Foxboro (Mass.) Stadium. The game is a rematch of the first MLS Cup in 1996 , coincidentally played in Foxboro, and won by D.C. 3-2 in overtime. A United Stance The United have clearly been the showpiece of the MLS since the league's inception in 1996. They have reached the MLS Cup each year, winning the first two while being rebuffed by the Chicago Fire in 1998 . On Sunday they look to reclaim their lofty perch atop the league with a victory over the Galaxy.
