Extractions: Courier Mail May 30 1999 Heading off overseas in search of fame is a worthwhile ambition, with more than 100 Aussies scattered around the globe making a good living from soccer. But it's sad so many of us feel the need to quit Australia to reach our goals. What we need is a fully professional national competition back home which will encourage players to stay and make a go of it in Australia. It's crucial to the future of the game in this country and our standing in the game's pecking order that we lift the level of our national competition. That means encouraging quality players to stay and play in their own backyard. Teams such as Perth Glory and Northern Spirit with their fulltime set-ups and modern approach are setting the standards for the rest to follow Down Under. They attract big followings and have proved that soccer is capable audience in Australia. The challenge is now for others to follow and for sponsors and the media to get involved to lift soccer to the sort of heights it enjoys in the rest of the world.

Extractions: MELBOURNE (Reuters) Socceroos coach Frank Farina named England-based strikers Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka on Thursday in a 22-man squad for Australia's friendly international against South Africa in London on March 30. Liverpool's Kewell and Leeds United's Viduka were among six absentees from the friendly against Venezuela in Caracas last month because of injury. The Australian Soccer Association (ASA) enforced five-day FIFA bans against Viduka and Basel's Scott Chipperfield for missing the match but excused the other four players. ASA chief executive John O'Neill will meet Kewell in London next week to discuss the Liverpool player's plea to avoid travelling long distances to play for Australia because of his chronic ankle injury. O'Neill said earlier this month he did not disbelieve Kewell's statement that he was unable to travel long distances because of the injury, but added he was seeking independent verification. Speaking from London on Thursday, Farina dismissed a suggestion Kewell was angered by the ASA's stance.
Extractions: With the OFCs Olympic Qualifying tournament set down for just over two months time in Sydney and Auckland, it is a good time to examine some issues pertaining to the Olyroos a little over a year out form Athens. Olympic soccer has been somewhat of the ugly sister of the game thats not to say it doesnt have its own charm and appeal. More than 94,000 crammed the MCG for the Olyroos against Italy in 2000 and over 104,000 watched the final 3 weeks later in Sydney. In between we witnessed a great number of fixtures in front of some healthy crowds right around Australia. The 2000 Olympic football tourney left its legacy in terms of stadiums. Adelaide got a new Hindmarsh Stadium, Canberra Stadium became a fully-fledged quality ground and the Olympics were the catalyst behind turning the Gabba from an over-grown run down dog track to a World-Class venue. The negatives were on the pitch itself. The Olyroos went in primed for a legitimate crack at a medal. The Matildas, with luck on home crowds on their side, would have hoped for the same. By the end of the Group stage Australias sons and daughters had let in no less than 12 goals, half a dozen for each side. The Olyroos managed 3 goals for, the girls only 2.
