Extractions: Goteborg, Sweden A Beckham-less England squad failed to grant head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson the gift of grabbing a win in his homeland, falling 1-0 to Sweden in international friendly action Wednesday. "Psychologically, it was important that we scored the goal," said Sweden coach Lars Lagerback. "Then the players could relax but try to control the match. England also missed some good players." With skipper David Beckham and deputy-captain Michael Owen both missing through injury, Eriksson handed the armband to 23-year-old Steven Gerrard, who led the team into Stockholm. Zlatan Ibrahimovic tallied the match-winner less than 10 minutes out from the intermission, netting the lone goal in the 54th minute for the Swedes. The Ajax striker flicked home Kim Kallstrom's cross in behind 'keeper David James as Sweden is now unbeaten in 11 matches against England dating back to 1968.

Contents 02 May 1999 MANCHESTER United knocked Arsenal off the top of the English premier league yesterday when an own goal from Steve Watson and a blistering secondhalf free kick from David Beckham gave them a 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. United could even afford a Denis Irwin penalty miss as they moved on to 71 points from 34 matches, two more points than Arsenal, who have also played 34 matches. Defending champions Arsenal have the chance of going to the top again when they play Derby County at Highbury today. Chelsea kept themselves in the title race by moving on to 68 points from 35 matches from a 3-1 home win over Everton, with two goals from Gianfranco Zola and one from Dan Petrescu. Leeds, who still have a slim mathematical chance of winning the title, won 5-1 at West Ham who finished with only eight men after striker Ian Wright, goalkeeper Shaka Hislop and midfielder Steve Lomas were all sent off. Leeds took the lead through Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after only 19 seconds with Alan Smith, Ian Harte (penalty), Lee Bowyer and Alf-Inge Haaland adding the others. They have now qualified for next season's UEFA Cup. The relegation battle between Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers ended 0-0 and Southampton beat Leicester 2-1.

Extractions: Print Email Last Update: Monday, May 3, 2004. 5:49am AEST All over now ... Mark Viduka is sent off (Getty Images) Two minutes of madness from Australian striker Mark Viduka helped seal Leeds United's fate overnight as a 4-1 hammering by Bolton condemned the Yorkshire giants to relegation from the English Premier League. Viduka gave his side a half-time lead from the penalty spot before being sent off for the second time in a month after receiving two yellow cards in the space of as many minutes. The 20th defeat of a painful season left Leeds six points adrift of Manchester City, the only side they had any chance of catching, with just two games left in the top flight. Leeds could still equal City's points total, but a goal difference that is 36 goals worse than their rivals means they have no chance of escaping the same fate as Leicester and Wolves, both of whom were relegated on Saturday. Three goals in the 10 minutes after the interval - a Youri Djorkaeff double and an agonising own goal by Ian Harte - sealed Leeds' fate after Viduka had put them in front. Kevin Nolan extended Bolton's winning margin near the end but the real damage was done by Viduka's petulance.
Extractions: Print Email Last Update: Monday, April 26, 2004. 5:55am AEST Leeds boss Eddie Gray has refused to concede defeat in his side's battle to avoid relegation from the English Premiership, despite a 2-1 defeat at home to Portsmouth that pushed them to the edge of the abyss. Leeds are now three points from safety with three matches left to play. Gray readily acknowledged the size of the task in hand over the remaining games, but insisted it was not all over yet. "I know how difficult it's going to be - it will be extremely difficult," said the Leeds chief. "But when there are still points to play for, you keep working hard and try to pick them up." Gray refused to point to Mark Viduka's unavailability as a major factor behind his side's latest setback. The Australian striker was missing through suspension, forcing Gray to field the inexperienced Simon Johnson. "You can't use that as an excuse," added Gray. "Lots of clubs have to do without players due to injury or suspension. "You can't look for excuses - if you play 38 games and get relegated, you deserve to get relegated."
