Extractions: Mali(1) 1 KAIZER Chiefs striker Siyabonga Nomvete scored a brace to take his international goal tally to eight goals thus becoming the leading goal scorer for the South African Under-21 team in a convincing victory over Mali in the All Africa Games yesterday. South Africa now qualify for the semi-finals on Friday, though they still have to play Uganda, who lost 2-0 to Algeria. In what was a spectacular game South Africa dominated having started very slowly with Mali using conventional longballs. Despite the glamour and glitz that accompanied the opening ceremony at the Johannesburg Stadium on Friday evening the conditions at this venue are appalling to say the least. TStrong, gusty winds, did not make matters any better. It still does not make sense why the local organising committee continues to play games here when they could have rescheduled the matches for the better Rand Stadium, where facilities and playing conditions are equal to standard. Of course, television and radio received priority there were not even telephone lines for press reporters. The pitch is bumpy, making ball control a mission, even for the most skillful players.

Extractions: Eagle-Tribune Writer One day after firing their head coach, the New England Revolution pulled off the largest player trade in Major League Soccer history. The Revs dealt forward Mamadou Diallo, plus midfielders Andy Williams and Ted Chronopoulos to the New York-New Jersey MetroStars in exchange for forward Diego Serna, along with midfielder/defenders Daniel Hernandez and Brian Kamler. New England probably isn't done making moves yet. The trade opened up a slot on the Revs roster for a "senior international" player (a foreigner, 25 or older, who doesn't have a green card). Candidates to fill that spot may include Swiss midfielder Patrick Buehlmann and Brazilian defender Edu, both of whom have trained with the Revs in recent weeks. Serna, 28, scored 15 goals last year with Miami, often combining with league MVP Alex Pineda Chacon to create offense. Neither Chacon, who's now a Rev, or Serna has fared as well since leaving Miami after the Fusion folded, but the duo has been reunited in Foxboro. "Diego is a proven goal scorer who has made an impact in this league since he joined it in 1998," said Revs interim head coach Steve Nicol in a statement. Nicol took over Thursday when Fernando Clavijo was fired. "He and Alex Pineda Chacon connected so well together on the field playing for Miami last year, and we are excited to pair them up again here in New England."
