Extractions: [MetroNews/inc/metronews.htm] MetroStars Defender Craig Ziadie Named MLS Player of the Week SECAUCUS, NJ (Tuesday, May 6, 2003) - MetroStars defender Craig Ziadie was named MLS Player of the Week by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association for the week ending May 4, 2003. The Jamaican international, in his third MLS season, captured his first-ever weekly honor after leading the MetroStars' comeback on Saturday with his first career goal and an assist in a 2-1 home victory over the Colorado Rapids at Giants Stadium. The 24-year-old started at left back for the MetroStars and then moved to right back when Chris Leitch went down with an injury. From his natural position he then led the charge as the Metros overcame a one-goal deficit after the break. In a matter of 12 minutes in the second half Ziadie assisted on Clint Mathis' 51st minute goal and then gave the Metros the lead for good on a spectacular solo effort in the 62nd minute. The University of Richmond product collected the ball on the right flank, converged toward the center of the field, dribbled his way to the top of the box and unleashed an accurate left-footed shot, which beat goalkeeper Scott Vallow. Ziadie appeared in 39 MLS matches entering the 2003 season, including a career high 21 in 2002. The dual citizen and native of Pembroke Pines, Florida was made the 28th overall selection by D.C. United in the 2001 SuperDraft. Following 18 appearances in his rookie season, Ziadie was traded to the MetroStars on May 9, 2002. Last week's Player of the Week, the Chicago Fire's Orlando Perez, was one of the players who moved to D.C. United in the exchange.

Extractions: This piece appeared originally on CyberSoccerNews.com If this were just a match report I would tell you that the New York/New Jersey Metrostars beat the New England Revolution 2-0 on Saturday. I would say that it was hot and humid, that the game was slow. I would mention that Mamadou Diallo scored five minutes in and then was sent off for a bad challenge on Revolution keeper Adin Brown in the 32nd minute after he had been whistled offside. I would have to tell you that the Revolution did what any team, up a man, should do in that situation. They stretched the Metrostars by moving the ball out to each flank, dominating possession in the middle and pinning the visitors in their own half. I might try to dramatize the building frustration on the New England side as they watched shot after shot sail wide or find the sure hands of Metro keeper Tim Howard. Id have to describe NY/NJs second goal, a classic counter attack that saw Clint Mathis juke his defender and get off a hard shot that Brown couldnt hold, spilling the ball right in front of goal for Mark Lisi to side foot into the net, killing off the Revolution rally and confirming the heartbreak of another loss for the hapless New England side. But this is more than a match report, because the final result is only really a fraction of the story. Diallos sending off is certainly a story unto itself. The futility of the Revolutions attempt to salvage their season and how they are reacting make for more drama, and frosting our cake is the heartrending return of Diallo, Andy Williams and Ted Chronopoulos to beat the team that traded them down I-95 little more than a month ago.
