Strasbourg terminated Chilvart's contract on Thursday following the player's refusal to play for the club in a legal dispute. Chilavert, who claims he is owed 3million from his transfer from Argentinian club Velez Sarsfield, has filed a complaint against Strasbourg chairman Patrick Proisy for racial insults. "Patrick Proisy was quoted as calling my client a Michelin man," Chilavert's lawyer said. "Proisy also said my client came from a banana republic in a direct hint at the South American origins of Chilavert."

Extractions: In Japan there is the One School, One Country Program, in which elementary and middle schools each support athletes or players from one country. This was first done at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics , and athletes from around the world were greatly encouraged by the support of Japanese kids. The same system was used in Australia at the time of the Sydney Olympics and in the United States for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Japan, where One school, One Country started, is using the system again for the World Cup. In one of the host cities, Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture, for example, four elementary schools near Kobe Wing Stadium have each taken charge of supporting one of the four countries that will play first-round matches at the stadium. Nigeria will be supported by Hamayama Elementary, Russia by Meishin Elementary, Sweden by Wada-Misaki Elementary, and Tunisia by Mano Elementary. The schools are conducting various exchange activities, such as inviting people from these countries that live in Kobe to come and talk about their country's culture, and kids from each school have made big flags with messages of support written on. In Sapporo, on the island of Hokkaido, local schools are supporting the six teams that will play first-round matches in the city. Germany will be supported by Satsunae Elementary School and Ayameno Elementary, Saudi Arabia by Nisshin Elementary, Italy by Yamahana Elementary, Ecuador by Kami-Nopporo-Higashi Elementary, Argentina by Honcho Elementary, and England by Kami-Shiroishi Elementary and Toyohira Elementary. The schools are researching their countries and making efforts to support the teams.

Chilavert (right) was suspended for four games for spitting at Roberto Carlos after Paraguay's tempestuous encounter with Brazil - he missed their last two qualifiers and will also be absent from the first two matches in Korea/Japan. His place in goal will be taken by Ricardo Tavarelli or possibly Aldo Bobadilla, both competent custodians but neither of whom convey the charisma and influence of Chilavert.

The charismatic veteran had vowed to keep a clean sheet - and also score twice himself - after returning from a four-game suspension earned for spitting at Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos during a qualifier. But Spain, having let Chilavert wind them up all week, dramatically turned the tables after falling behind to an early own goal from Puyol.

Surprising Cerrito went down to its first defeat of the season in Uruguay when they were trounced 4-0 by the defending champions, Penarol. Peru Striker Julio Garcia scored and was sent off 16 minutes later as Cienciano beat champions and leaders Alianza Lima 1-0 in a top-of-the-table clash on Wednesday, ending their opponents' unbeaten domestic run, which stretched well back into last year. Garcia scrambled home a 21st-minute winner, only to be given his marching orders in the 37th for a second bookable offense. Cienciano defended fiercely for the rest of the match as they moved within three points of Alianza Lima in the Apertura, the first stage of the championship. They stayed third behind Alianza Atletico on goal difference after the Sullana-based team beat Atletico Universidad 3-2.

Chilavert, who plays for Argentine first division club Velez Sarsfield, gave suggestions on Japanese television over the weekend on how Japan should play Argentina in their June 14World Cup clash. "This Paraguayan sportsman has done something very serious, which offends Argentines," said Senator Alberto Tell, a member of President Carlos Menems Peronist Party. Senators Tell and Angel Pardo called on the government to prevent Chilavert from being allowed back into Argentina. Chilavert is a controversial goalkeeper known for fist-fighting on and off the pitch and has accused Argentines of resenting his success because he is Paraguayan. Reut

Contents 12 June 1998 Bulgaria coach Hristo Bonev drafted in Anatoli Nankov in addition to defender Radostin Kishishev to face Paraguay in their World Cup clash on Friday, suggesting a more forward role for Kishishev. Generally the 23-year-old Kishishev, best of the youngsters in a team dominated by the veterans of the 1994 semifinal, has played at right-back but Nankov could fill that role allowing the Litex Lovech player to push forward. Paraguay, the Latin American outsiders in a group D that also includes Spain and Nigeria, failed to field their fiery and formidable veteran centre-back Catalino Rivarolo. With Francisco Arce out injured, trainer Paulo Cesar Carpegiani seems to have a hole in a defence that has let in 10 goals in their last four warm-up matches. River Plate defender Pedro Sarabia may have the job of marking Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov, who is 10 years his senior but insists he is now better than when he was joint top scorer at USÀ94. Stoichkov failed to win back his captains armband even in the absence of injured goalkeeper Borislav Mihailov. Stoichkovs CSKA team-mate Trifon Ivanov, with whom he has an uneasy rivalry, will captain the side from the back.

Extractions: First Published: Jun 12, 2002 An 85th minute goal from substitute Nelson Cuevas put Paraguay into the second round of the World Cup thanks to goals scored. Paraguay ended level on points and goal difference with South Africa but go through to meet Germany on Saturday thanks to Cuevas effort. He skipped inside one tackle on the right wing and then carried the ball away from another defender before crashing a hot against the underside of the crossbar. Cuevas gave Paraguay a little hope in the 66th minute when he ran into the penalty area and stepped away from a defender to score with a low left-foot shot and then Jorge Campos hit in an angled drive to put Paraguay ahead in the 76th minute. Goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert then forced goalkeeper Marko Simeunovic to touch a long range free kick onto the bar as Paraguay were further encouraged by a red card for Slovenia substitute Ales Ceh and they rallied to get the crucial goal and knock out South Africa. The South Americans needed a substantial win but were reduced to ten men in the 22nd minute when Carlos Paredes was red carded for a second booking and Paraguay took most of the game to recover.
Extractions: Paraguayan keeper Jose Luis Chilavert may have played his last game for struggling Strasbourg after a disastrous two months in France. Chilavert will miss Saturday's trip to Sedan with an injured knee but rumours are growing that he will not get back in the team. The fact that coach Yvon Pouliquen has refused to comment on the situation has merely heightened the speculation. The 35-year-old former Velez Sarfield keeper, who was one of the stars of the 1998 World Cup, has been out of form and there has been much criticism of his fitness, with allegations that he is overweight. Chilavert's move to France has seemed ill-fated since his arrival, after he joined the club amid huge controversy in November when president Patrick Proisy signed him without telling his coaching staff. The move angered many in the Strasbourg team who backed previous keeper Thierry Debes. Some gave Chilavert the cold shoulder on his arrival, and captain Teddy Bertin was one of the worst offenders. He even had to apologise over his behaviour, but by then he had lost the captaincy.

Brazil eventually qualified, but only after employing four coaches, 59 players and a radically different strategy. Brazil still owns a formidable pool of established stars led by three former FIFA players of the year: Romario (1994), Ronaldo (1998) and Rivaldo (1999), a midfielder with superb touch and vision. Joining them are midfielders Denilson and Djalminha, defenders Roberto Carlos and Cafu, forward Mario Jardel and a group of budding stars named Athirson, Franca and Wamberto.

Extractions: Profiles - World Cup Teams - Paraguay At first glance there are not too many similarities between the Irish and the Paraguayan soccer teams. But in one respect they do have something in common. Neither can be considered among the favourites to win the 2002 World Cup but anyone who underestimates them is likely to get a very rude awakening. But Paraguay also have similarities with Argentina. Like the Argentines, Paraguay play with a combination of skill and aggression. And like Argentina, they are a very tight-knit team. Paraguay, who finished fourth in the South American group behind Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil have qualified for their second successive World Cup and the fifth in their history. In 1986 and 1998, Paraguay progressed to the last 16. An impoverished, land-locked South American nation, the World Cup provides a rare chance for Paraguay to appear on the world stage.
