Extractions: Manchester United hope to complete the signing of French World Cup winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez today. Barthez won the French championship with AS Monaco in April but was in Manchester last night to follow up United's offer of a six year contract worth more than £15 million in wages. With a transfer fee expected to top £10 million, Barthez will become the most expensive goalkeeper in history as the English champions continue to search for Peter Schmeichel's definitive replacement. Danish captain Schmeichel won the Portuguese championship in his first season with Sporting Lisbon and will play in Euro 2000 next month but his loss by United has seen them flounder in the search for a suitable replacement. Australian international Mark Bosnich was signed on a free transfer from Aston Villa last summer to take over from Schmeichel but United were soon active on the continent looking at Parma star Gianluigi Buffon before buying Massimo Taibi in a then record £4.5 million transfer that went quickly wrong. With Bosnich injured, Taibi was found wanting and blamed foe several autumn defeats before being loaned out to Reggina where he remains. Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw contested the goal keeping position while United scanned the European leagues.
Extractions: After 144 group matches and qualifying rounds that started last July the knockout stage of the Champions League started with holders Manchester United earning a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. This even game saw United become the likelier winners as time passed with Real failing to beat goalkeeper Mark Bosnich when they did manage to gain ascendency in the tie. Bosnich was equal to a fierce free kick from Roberto Carlos in the opening seconds of the second half and a 72nd minute shot from Savio but the game failed to deliver on the attacking promise of the first 45 minutes and the match petered out to a scoreless well tempered draw. The sides cancelled each other out and Real failed to take their home advantage and and turn it into goals. David Beckham failed to shine in the first session. He was faced with runs from Savio and Roberto Carlos down the Real left flank and the Brazilian pair had all the time they needed to control the play on that side of the pitch. The twin wide threats in the Real team pattern of McManaman on the right and Savio on the left came close to dominating the early stages of this match.

Extractions: In front of a diehard bunch of 40 or Breakers supporters who gamely brought the Breakers! Breakers! chant to Bossley Park the hopes of the Breakers to win some silverware this season with our NYL side faltered again when firmly beaten by a sharper, faster, Marconi team. Brad Swancott in goal tried hard to keep the score down but time and time again the Marconi forwards and even midfielders waltzed through the defence leaving him exposed. As with the senior team lack of firepower up front also was telling. We can only hope that the nerves will be expunged in Newcastle next week. Before the main game a git doing a Rod Stewart impersonation, and two glitter clad ladies doing a dance routine entertained the smallish crowd which, as I explained to the Newcastle troop and unlike Breakers Stadium, rolls in about the last 15 minutes. Extractions: Bosnich is likely to be supported by the PFA Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich will fight the Football Association over its misconduct charge following his positive cocaine test. The Australian was suspended from all football activities after being found guilty of breaching doping regulations and bringing the game into disrepute. But he is now expected to request a personal hearing and will appeal the FA ban in a bid to resurrect his professional career. "I can confirm that Mark Bosnich's legal team have responded and they are contesting the charge," said FA spokesman Adrian Bevington on Friday. If the FA's charges are upheld, Bosnich could be handed a worldwide ban for up to a year. Bosnich's legal team will present evidence to an FA Disciplinary Commission hearing along with the Professional Footballers Association, which is thought to be are ready to back the 30-year-old. On 7 January, Chelsea gave him formal notice of 14 days that they intended to sack him.

Extractions: SoccerTimes (Thursday, October 7, 1999) Something of a bidding war seems to have broken out for the services of Columbus Crew striker Stern John. He has a year left on his Major League Soccer contract, but the league says it will not stand in the way of John moving to England as early as the day after the MLS season ends for Columbus. When former New England Revolution player-coach Walter Zenga gave the Revs an ultimatum of sign him to a contract extension, or release him because he had other prospects, those other prospects now seem to be applying for jobs. It appears Zenga has applied for the Costa Rican national team's vacant coaching position. Costa Rican papers say that Zenga threw his hat in the ring to replace Colombian Francisco (Pacho) Maturana, who quit Costa Rica to coach Peru. Zenga may have some stiff competition. When Maturana quit, Costa Rican Football Association officials say they entered into preliminary discussions with Brazilian coaching legend Mario Zagallo. Zagallo was fired Monday as coach of Sao Paulo based Portuguesa, so he is available.
Extractions: The original is at http://www.therockalltimes.co.uk/2002/12/30/bosnich-denies.html Faces down claims of interest in football by Alan Roberts Shamed suave soccer superstar, Mark "Bozzy" Bosnich has vowed to fight on in his heart-rending battle to get back his former place as Chelsea's top drug user. The Australian's month of shame continued when an FA football testing unit dropped in at the London team's training ground and reportedly caught Bozzy indulging in a quick spot of five-a-side. Charges were immediately brought against the former Manchester United bench-warmer amid allegations that he retains some interest in the game. However, the big-boned Aussie has vigorously defended himself, maintaining that he was simply standing around when some of his team mates were kicking a ball. "It's guilt by association," he whined, "as opposed to guilt by association football. I swear I've never done anything to help Chelsea on the football pitch since I arrived." However even if the FA charges are defeated, Bosnich is expected to face a great deal of competition for the number one banned substances spot at Chelsea from such other dedicated members of the Blues bloated squad including Jody Morris and John Terry.
