Extractions: he brings glory to his club and country By DEBAPRIYA GHOSH Surely, on silent Sunday after-noons, Baichung Bhutia, 26, must be wondering about the way his life has turned out. It is a fantasy come true. Born in the enchanting village of Tinkitam in Sikkim, way up in the mountains, he showed early skill with the ball. It would have remained a pastime but for former India internationals Bhaskar Ganguly and Surajit Sengupta who spotted him during a State Bank of India soccer clinic in Gangtok. Today, Baichung is the toast of the nation after his sterling performance in the LG Asean Club Cup football championship held in Jakarta last month, where East Bengal became the first Indian club to win an international title. They beat favourites BEC Tero Sasana of Thailand, 3-1, in the final, with Baichung scoring the second goal. He took his tally to nine and was voted player of the tournament. Clearly, India's captain leads from the front.

"Dear Sir/Madam: I would like to make a suggestion to you regarding the sports content of your newspaper. Cricket has established itself as major sport in India with money, success and a future for it and it will not step down from the success it has had with the masses. It is logical now that another sport be given more coverage and opportunity and that would be Indian Football (soccer). I know that the leagues in India are not comparable to those of Europe or South America let alone those of South East Asia. But, should India try to send a team of substance to the World Cup, it will only be possible if the sport is given more recognition and sponsors. A number of Indians abroad (including myself) as well as a heap of Indians in India itself, share the same view and would encourage you to increase the coverage of this sliding sport and change the course of our sporting tradition (for a better one obviously).

Football Baichung Bhutia The tattoo on his right arm speaks of the intense love this young Sikkimese has for the sport - it is a meticulously imprinted picture of footballer in action. When he was a kid he would scan newspapers to see if there was any football match being aired on TV. If yes, he would take a three-hour bus ride from his native Tinkitam to Gangtok to watch the matches as his village had no television sets. Bhutia is today the only Indian footballer to play professional club soccer in England. He was selected by second division club F.C. Bury for its squad - and it was a dream come true to play against the likes of David Beckham and Andy Cole of Manchester United in an Exhibition Match.

He is none than, the star of Indian soccer, Baichung Bhutia who's India's first high-profile, endorsement-worthy soccer star. Baichung Bhutia earns Rs. 15 lakhs a season from East Bengal (the best-paid ever), drives a Maruti 1000, owns a flat in Calcutta, is managed by the world's premier sports-management company, IMG (that's a first too) and has become one of India 's few alternative sporting heroes to the cricketers. Baichung Bhutia is more than just a youthful assassin in boots, his repertoire not limited to being that classical Paolo Rossi- type opportunist. He can contruct goals, dancing and dribbling into the 18-yard box, feinting an opponent woth an imperceptible dip of the hip; he can hustle the opposition too. Bhutia has a unique gift: a sixth sense, a great striker's rare ability to smell goal. A sort of tingle in his nostril when he gets into the 18-yard box, a sort of chemocal kick in his brain that tells him, without looking ,that the goalkeeper's off his line , that the defender's moved, that there's a goal to be had. In Gangtok, Sikkim where he comes from, he is the local hero. He started his career as a 16-year old , when he was spotted by former Indian goalkeeper Bhaskar Ganguly at a State Bank of India camp, and he convinced reluctant East Bengal officials to sign him up. He left Gangtok and arrived in Calcutta in 1993 at Rs.4000 a month, a bed in the mess and school fees paid for, and just sat around, watching, being played for 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there, but mainly learning. And then it happened. In extra time of the 1993 Durand Cup, semifinal versus BSF, he scored the match-winning goal. With a back volley. With two minutes left. And although people knew that Bhutia was wonderfully agile ("like an acrobat," says Indian coach S.Nayeemuddin) and flexible (at 5"7 he can head over 6 footers) and fearless, this was different. It meant that just possibly he had that smell.

Extractions: Despite having attained iconic status in India through years of top level performances, footballer Baichung Bhutia still strives to raise the bar. The gifted striker retains the hunger to score more goals and hopes to put up an even better show in the coming season. "I always strive to improve. I'll try to play even better in 2004-05," said Bhutia, the greatest name in present Indian soccer. "But, at the same time, I feel that football being a team game, it is the team performance which matters. My target for the next season is to ensure that whichever side I play in wins tournaments," the 27-year old striker said. However, he refused to disclose his club preferences for the coming season. "I don't want to disclose now the offers I have received. Also I would prefer to remain silent now whether I have received feelers from foreign outfits," said Bhutia, who created a sensation by becoming the first Indian to take part in the English professional league in 1999 by joining Manchester's Bury FC. The Sikkimese played three years with the English second division side Bury, till returning to India in 2002. It has been a fairy-tale story for Bhutia ever since he stepped out of the sleepy Sikkimese village of Tinkitam and landed in Kolkata as an immensely talented 16-year old in 1993 when he signed for East Bengal.
