I got my ticket two weeks ago and got second row seats, halfway between center ice and one of the "non-lutz" corners, towards the skaters' entrance area. Last year, I was about six or seven rows from the top of the United Center :) so my viewing experience was much different this time around! Last year, it was neat to be able to see the ice coverage patterns of the skaters; this year, I was able to notice facial expressions, hand movements, and other details. It was also a bit scary watching a skater set up for a jump right in front of me. :)

Extractions: Figure skating is an ice skating sporting event where individuals and mixed couples compete to try to perform the most spectacular and accurately-performed elements while skating to music. Figure skaters use skates which differ slightly from hockey skates, to perform spins, jumps, and other "moves" on the ice, often to music. There are international competitions for figure skating, such as the World Championships and figure skating is also an official event in the Winter Olympics There are six major jumps in figure skating. All six are landed on a right back outside edge by righthanded skaters, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest): Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot); Flips, which take off from the back inside edge of the left foot and are launched by the right toe pick;

Although this is not my favorite silverblades book and Danielle Panati is not my favourite silverblades mamber I have to say this book had its moments.At some points it drifted away from scating.... but on a whole it is a very pleasant read ... i cant wait to read the rest of the series... I would safely recommend it for anyone who loves scating :-) Excellent! This book is really wonderful. Danielle is dealing with a weight problem-something that occurs to lots of skaters. She comes through strongly and gives a great performance. A good read for people who have athletic problems. Extractions: Skate Canada 1997 Halifax, NS Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Halifax was the site of the 1990 World Champions and after seven years the arena is a lot older and a lot newer. The seating area and other parts of the building are showing their age, but renovations are under way, and luxury boxes are being added. Halifax will be the site of the first Four Continents Championships in February 1999. Although clearly the front runner, it is nevertheless still to early to mail Elvis the Olympic gold medal. Still to be heard from is Alexei Urmanov, who had an excellent chance to win the gold in Lausanne until his groin injury knocked his out of the competition. It remains to be seen how his physical condition will play out this season. Then there is the fact that Stojko is not invincibly consistent. He does make his share of errors, and a significant error in either the short program or the long could well spell disaster for him with so many strong skaters waiting in line for him to fall. Kasakova and Dmitriev were the only team here this week which has a serious chance to medal at the Olympics. They would have an even better chance if Dmitiriev would lose 20 pounds. They clearly have the edge in the second mark over both Woetzel and Steuer, and Eltsova and Bushkov, but will have to bring up their technical quality a notch in order to move up (assuming of course their competition doesn't help them by falling down). Although they are not likely to challenge for a medal in Nagano, two teams that skated here that have improved considerably since the spring are the French team of Abitbol and Bernadis, and the Polish team of Zagorska and Siudek.

Extractions: Times Staff Writer Brian Boitano thinks figure-skating fans will love the lineup coming to the First Union Center. Boitano will host the 2001 Motrin American Open on Dec. 4 and 5. The world's only pro skating championship is coming to Philadelphia after two years at the Fox Valley Ice Arena in the suburban Chicago community of Geneva, Ill. Competitors will include Olympic champion Alexei Urmanov, world champion Lu Chen, former U.S. national champions Nicole Bobek and Scott Davis, and international stars like Steven Cousins of Great Britain. Boitano, speaking with reporters last week on a conference call from San Francisco, said the skaters haven't lost their edge. "They're still at the top of their professional skating careers," he said. The event will feature men's and women's singles, and pairs and ice dancing competitions. In addition, there will be an added dimension show act or "extreme skating." That form of skating includes acrobats and comedic skaters executing routines on and above the ice. "Sometimes they're juggling fire or skating with Hula-Hoops, or one guy stands on the other guy's head," Boitano said. "It's great. There are no restrictions on the ideas they can come up with."

Extractions: The new season's ISU Grand Prix of Skating opened in Detroit with the Thrifty Car Rental Skate America International which concluded Saturday (results and standings attached). In the men's event, world champion Alexei Yagudin (RUS), now training with Tatiana Tarasova, started the season in outstanding form. He performed a clean short program, based on a circus theme, to take the lead. Olympic silver medallist Elvis Stojko (CAN), making his comeback from the groin injury that kept him off the ice for four months, was the only skater to attempt a quadruple jump (a new option this season) in the short program. He missed but did enough to finish second ahead of Michael Weiss (USA) and 1994 Olympic champion Alexei Urmanov (RUS), also making a comeback from injury. Urmanov skated first of the top contenders in the free program. He produced eight triples and unusual spin combinations in his Tango routine to prove that he is back to world class after missing an entire season. He earned one 5.9 and thirteen 5.8s. Stojko, not yet back to top form, again attempted a quad but two-footed the landing and struggled with other elements to slip to fourth place overall. Weiss also went for the quad and came close to landing it. He then reeled off eight triples in his new free program in one of the best performances of his career to win three 5.9s for technical merit and ten 5.8s and beat Urmanov. But Yagudin, skating next, eclipsed him with a program that included two triple/triple combinations. He earned a total of ten 5.9s to win overall in a 8:1 majority verdict over Weiss. Weiss tops the overall rankings after the first of the six events as this was a non-points scoring event for Yagudin.

Alexei Urmanov enjoyed "Romeo and Juliet" in Germany Alexei enjoyed performing for the second season with the "Romeo and Juliet" musical on ice. This spring, the musical debuted in Germany (Bad Tölz, Hannover) and went to Basel, Switzerland, as well. As last year, Alexei played the role of Julia's passionate cousin Tybalt. "I think this role suits me well", Alexei said. "When they suggested this role to me, I accepted it right away." Performing in the musical is different from skating in usual shows. Alexei also took fencing lessons. "It's quite a change to skate in this costume and with the long hair wig. Playing in the musical is like in a theatre. You don't just skate your number, but you're working with an ensemble." The musical might come back to Germany this fall, and Alexei is considering to stay with it.

Extractions: The Story of Alexei. Istoriya Alexeia "If you skate for money only, it shows" W hen he reached the top, it came as a big surprise. As well to himself. He caught the whole figure skating world off guard - rivals, coaches, journalists, spectators. Alexei Urmanov never won a major title before becoming Olympic Figure Skating Champion in Hamar 1994. And even if some people preferred the Canadian Elvis Stojko, it was perfectly fair, that the Russian took the Olympic crown. Besides, there is not truth in the myth that it was a close decision between Urmanov and Stojko, even the Canadian judge had voted for the Russian. A ll this, the excitement, the journalists, the packed press conference, the cheering crowds seem so far away in the primitive surroundings of the Yubileyniy practice rink in Alexei's hometown St. Petersburg. Condense water is dripping from the ceiling, a heap of broken benches is stapled in the corner. There is no hot water at the rink, the dressing rooms are sometimes closed - no reason known - , dirt lays in the corner, and shy wild cats hide between the rubbish. T he whole facility, built in 1967 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Great October Revolution, looks neglected. The renovation which was undertaken before the 1994 Goodwill Games was superficial, the cooling system broke down even then during the competitions. Now, sometimes there is no ice at all, and the skaters have to move elsewhere. The rink was shut down in spring 1998 for repairs, and no one knew when it would reopen (It finally reopened end of 1999).
