He was the World Champion, and he had won the silver medal at the last Olympics. But Elvis had a secret. He was badly injured and in great pain. Only his family and coaches knew. He didn't want people to feel sorry for him. He didn't want to talk about the pain. Elvis wanted to focus on his skating. Practices were torture for Elvis. He still kept his secret. Other athletes would have dropped out of the Olympics, but not Elvis. When it came time to perform, Elvis spun and jumped like a champion. As soon as Elvis finished skating, his face twisted in pain. Finally the whole world knew his secret. Elvis limped to the boards. His coach had to help him off the ice. But Elvis had skated his best. Despite being so badly injured, he won a silver medal. This new title is one of three books on the sport of ice skating that has been authored by Patty Cranston, with

Extractions: A NEW BLADE ... a profile of 1984 Bronze Medalist Jozef Sabovcik by Nichole Gantshar (Published in the September, 1995 issue of ICE AGE MAGAZINE) T his year during the Nancy Kerrigan Christmas Tour the 1984 bronze medalist, Jozef Sabovik, thrilled crowds with his triple jumps and flying spins. He reminds us how the Olympics Class from 1984 continues to thrill audiences. Sabovcik, however, does not think about the past or the difference between a bronze and a gold medal. He's still practicing his quad on a daily basis and plans to join fellow members of the quad club, Elvis Stojko, on Stojko's Canadian tour. Yet, the most important news in Sabovcik's life is his son, Blade. Sabovcik wanted to be sure that Blade was mentioned in this article. Sabovcik and his wife, former Canadian Ladies' Champion Tracey Wainman, didn't name his son for his skates. He wanted a distinctive name for his son and for reasons not related to skating, he and Wainman kept coming back to distinctive names with a literal and figurative edge. T hrilling audiences this Fall, Sabovcik will join a national tour with Elvis Stojko. Sabovcik shares Stojko's love of rock and roll and big jumps. Combat and weaponry fascinate Sabovcik. He is also fond of horror films the adaptation of Clive Barker's Hellraiser is his favorite. He also likes reading horror novels by Stephen King and others.

Extractions: Skate Canada 1997 Halifax, NS Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Halifax was the site of the 1990 World Champions and after seven years the arena is a lot older and a lot newer. The seating area and other parts of the building are showing their age, but renovations are under way, and luxury boxes are being added. Halifax will be the site of the first Four Continents Championships in February 1999. Although clearly the front runner, it is nevertheless still to early to mail Elvis the Olympic gold medal. Still to be heard from is Alexei Urmanov, who had an excellent chance to win the gold in Lausanne until his groin injury knocked his out of the competition. It remains to be seen how his physical condition will play out this season. Then there is the fact that Stojko is not invincibly consistent. He does make his share of errors, and a significant error in either the short program or the long could well spell disaster for him with so many strong skaters waiting in line for him to fall. Kasakova and Dmitriev were the only team here this week which has a serious chance to medal at the Olympics. They would have an even better chance if Dmitiriev would lose 20 pounds. They clearly have the edge in the second mark over both Woetzel and Steuer, and Eltsova and Bushkov, but will have to bring up their technical quality a notch in order to move up (assuming of course their competition doesn't help them by falling down). Although they are not likely to challenge for a medal in Nagano, two teams that skated here that have improved considerably since the spring are the French team of Abitbol and Bernadis, and the Polish team of Zagorska and Siudek.

Extractions: photo by Marylou Vrbanick Elvis Stojko had another magical night after skating his long program to the music from Merlin and winning his 5th Canadian National title. All of his fans are pleased to see him doing so well after suffering a severe groin injury during his long program at the 1998 Winter Olympics Games. Even with the injury, he bit the bullet and amazingly won his second Olympic silver medal. WAY TO GO, ELVIS! We look forward to seeing him at the World Championships at Helsinki in March. Elvis may not have succeeded in bringing home the gold from Helsinki but he did succeed in his battle against a severe groin injury. After a year and a half of one step forward and 2 steps back, he is, in his own words "100%" again and he let the world know it with his 4th place win at the '99 World Championships. He was the only man to attempt 2 quads in his long program, the second being a quad-double! He had a slight touchdown of both feet his first quad but had no problem whatsoever landing his quad-double. This man is a major contender so watch out world - the 2000 skating season is right around the corner!

Extractions: Gimenei Sports Skating Ice Skating Skaters Book: The Second Mark : Courage, Corruption, and the Battle for Olympic Gold - I've read many books on figure skating, and this is the best one I've ever opened. From the first chapter, I was fascinated with the background of these great athletes. Joy Goodwin has obviously done her homework........and has been deeply moved by their stories. I read the entire book in 3 days, and would reccomend it to anyone who loves a great story, not just skating fans. Video: The Lawrence Welk Show - The Lennon Sisters: Easy To Remember - This is certainly one of the best specials ever produced about the talented stars of Lawrence Welk's weekly musical dance-fest. Although the program is hosted by (and tells the story of) the lovely Lennon Sisters, it also offers a marvelous portrait of the singers and musicians who performed in the earlier years of the show Alice Lon, Big Tiny Little, Pete Fountain, Rocky Rockwell and many others. There are plentiful clips of these stars at their best, all tied together with present-day (well, early 90's) footage of the Lennons reminiscing about their days when they were part of Lawrence's musical family. A must-have for any Welk show fan! Video: The Sisters of the Gion - I just had a chance to see this beautiful movie, and once again I have to revise my ideas about Japanese cinemait's even more profound than I'd believed. What strikes the viewer immediately is the masterful use of shadow. The great novelist Kawabata wrote about the shadows of traditional Japanese homes and buildings, lit by lamps instead of neon, and this film utilizes shadow with the touch of a Rembrandt. The viewer is pulled into another world, the lovely and cruel world of pre-war Asia. The director explores the cruel circumstances of the sisters with compassion, and complete realism. The viewer knows with absolute certainty that the sisters will never escape their destinynot because of any moral failing, but because there's no way out. If you haven't seen this moviewatch it very soon and visit a world you've never dreamed of.
