Extractions: Just weeks ago, Alexei Mishin, legendary longtime coach to Plushenko and formerly to Olympic champion Alexei Yagudin, raised eyebrows when he was spotted filming Canadian skater Emanuel Sandhu during an exhibition at Skate Canada. It seemed Mishin saw something different, perhaps even threatening, in Sandhu's skill and style. He was right.

Extractions: Gimenei Sports Skating Ice Skating Skaters Book: The Second Mark : Courage, Corruption, and the Battle for Olympic Gold - I've read many books on figure skating, and this is the best one I've ever opened. From the first chapter, I was fascinated with the background of these great athletes. Joy Goodwin has obviously done her homework........and has been deeply moved by their stories. I read the entire book in 3 days, and would reccomend it to anyone who loves a great story, not just skating fans. Video: The Lawrence Welk Show - The Lennon Sisters: Easy To Remember - This is certainly one of the best specials ever produced about the talented stars of Lawrence Welk's weekly musical dance-fest. Although the program is hosted by (and tells the story of) the lovely Lennon Sisters, it also offers a marvelous portrait of the singers and musicians who performed in the earlier years of the show Alice Lon, Big Tiny Little, Pete Fountain, Rocky Rockwell and many others. There are plentiful clips of these stars at their best, all tied together with present-day (well, early 90's) footage of the Lennons reminiscing about their days when they were part of Lawrence's musical family. A must-have for any Welk show fan! Video: The Sisters of the Gion - I just had a chance to see this beautiful movie, and once again I have to revise my ideas about Japanese cinemait's even more profound than I'd believed. What strikes the viewer immediately is the masterful use of shadow. The great novelist Kawabata wrote about the shadows of traditional Japanese homes and buildings, lit by lamps instead of neon, and this film utilizes shadow with the touch of a Rembrandt. The viewer is pulled into another world, the lovely and cruel world of pre-war Asia. The director explores the cruel circumstances of the sisters with compassion, and complete realism. The viewer knows with absolute certainty that the sisters will never escape their destinynot because of any moral failing, but because there's no way out. If you haven't seen this moviewatch it very soon and visit a world you've never dreamed of.

Extractions: I'm easily entranced by dancers and the way their bodies move to music. Ever since I was a little girl, I longed to dance with the elegance of a ballerinathe most graceful dancers in the world. When I was eight years old, my parents enrolled me in ballet. I quit two years later (a whole other story) but throughout my teen years my parents were still graced with my pliés and inexperienced turns, which I would perform in the kitchen with small kicks, trying to extend the rotating movement much like a figure skater can. In fact former Eastern Bloc countries, home to some of the world's finest skaters, insist ballet training improves their body coordination. So, as my admiration for ballet continuedoften attending performances such as the farewell tour of Canada's legendary Karen Kain, along with various interpretations of Romeo and Julietso did my attention to figure skating. To me, they both represent beauty and an art of feminine expression. So when I attended Richmond Hill's Ed Sackfield Arena last month to meet 17-year-old Emanuel Sandhu, whose ballet-style figure skating gave former Olympic champion Debbie Wilkes goosebumps, I didn't know what to expect. Or did I? Sandhu glided onto the ice in a black one-piece skate suit with Canada written on the left side of his chest. Beginning at center ice, he practiced to "Pezzo and Finale" by Tchaikovsky. His body moved with great ease. Triple jumps and spins come easy to him. Quads are the next jumps he must master.

Extractions: 12:17 AM CST on Sunday, December 14, 2003 Cinquanta, attending the ISU Grand Prix Final at the World Arena, praised the new judging system and its global reception since its debut in the fall. The competition offered spectators the world's best skaters, as well as an upset Saturday when Canada's Emanuel Sandhu beat reigning world champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia for the men's title. Cinquanta seemed to have trouble acknowledging that fans remain skeptical of most judged sports, especially one that has judges' anonymity as a main feature of its reformed scoring system. "The judges asked us to protect them," said Cinquanta, a member of the International Olympic Committee's executive board and a former speed skater. "The problem was and is to preserve the event from possible interfering or influencing." Much of the current state of skating began at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, where the pairs judging scandal magnified the sport's main flaw. Critics of Cinquanta's realm have been out in force since he upstaged many of the athletic thrills and spills at the 2002 Games.

Extractions: Main This week the 2004 US figure skating championships begin. Our family has been watching some of the skating on TV this season. Earlier this year, I blogged how I thought this season might be boring, and Ted in a recent post said it's been boring for him. But I've realized in the past few weeks, that it hasn't been that boring for me. I've found two ways to enjoy this years skating season. So far this fall, we've seen the Grand Prix series, which consists of six competitions and a finale. We've also watched a couple other competitions in addition to the Grand Prix. True to expectation, Evgeni Plushenko and Sasha Cohen have won many trophies this fall. With Alexei Yagudin , the Olympic gold medalist, retired (and now on tour ), Plushenko, the 2002 silver medalist, has little competition at the top. Although he's skating with an injured knee, he almost always has had a huge point cushion between his score and number 2. Likewise in the ladies, with Michelle Kwan not participating in the Grand Prix (also Sarah Hughes enjoying life at Yale and Irina Slutskaya ill ), Sasha Cohen has had the podium to herself many times, a cake walk to the trophies for this cookie baker.
