Extractions: Many people are e-mailing me about the version of "Reflection" that Michelle skates to. It is not the version that is on the soundtrack, or in the movie. Someone that knows Lea Salonga, the singer of "Reflection", told me that Disney decided to cut it from the film (don't know why.) In fact, Lea didn't even have a copy of it until Disney sent her one about a month ago. However, when she promotes the film and has to sing the song live, she sings the long version. Her friend did not think it would be available as a single. The whole point of the special was to promote the movie, Mulan . If you would like, you can check out my review of the movie (which turned out to be my favorite summer movie!) Here are the final ratings for the Friday airing of "Reflections on Ice." The ratings were a 4.2 and a 9 share. So, approximately 6.7 million views watched the show. It was ranked 82 out of 116 shows, and was tied with Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. I went to the arena at about 4 and the dorrs were open! No one was there though. So we went and ate at Planet Hollywood, then came back. Michelle Kwan was on the ice! She did great in practice, I don't think she fell at all. At about 5:30 the other skaters started warming up. I stood at the top of the lower section and watched for almost an hour. Then a guard asked us to leave. We kept asking if there was any way to get passes for the autograph session but no one knew.

Extractions: John Hancock's Champions on Ice, 2001 By The Plaid Adder Comments: plaidder@mindspring.com So, I went to see Champions on Ice again this year on Saturday, and forgot to post a report. Events have faded in my mind, but because I know Morgan is out there waiting for this with bated breath (OK, Morgan, humor me and say it's true), here are my fragmentary reflections: First of all, it wasn't as good as last time. I know it's never as good as the first time, in general, but I think this also had to do with 2 things: 1) the enormous number of men skaters versus the very small number of women skaters and 2) a related deterioration in the quality of the male skaters' programs. The Champions on Ice people have evidently looked at the demographics and decided that what their audience wants to see is not so much excellent skating as excellent beefcake. There were some exceptions to this trend. Victor Petrenko, for instance, did a very nice Elvis medley wearing a baggy prison suit (Jailhouse Rock, you see) in which he proved that old as he may be getting, he can still jump. Brian Boitano skated a very interesting number to a song called "Blue," which had kind of a blue theme. Some guy named Dan Hollander did a comic routine to "The Rabbit of Seville" in which, with the aid of a reversible costume, he played both Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. (Cute concept; I found the execution a little clunky.) But most of the men were just out there shaking their little tushes on the catwalk. Michael Weiss, for instance, encased his lower half in shiny silver something or other and went out and skated to what I think, if my ears did not deceive me, was a Backstreet Boys medley. It was

Extractions: By Joseph Erbentraut I had never been to a winter tour of Champions on Ice and I must say that I enjoyed it. The cast, as was the arena, was smaller than the summer tour, which gave you a more intimate feel from the show. The cast also was stock full of performers, skaters more accustomed to skating in shows than competitions, where jumps are paramount. The programs also displayed good variety, and most skaters who had two programs showed off nice sides to their skating. Nancy Kerrigan and Anissina/Peizerat weren't there. I'm pretty sure Kerrigan will be joining future shows but Anissina/Peizerat are now off the cast list on the website although they are still pictured in the program. After we got past the parking nightmare outside the brand-new Resch Center, we found out seats.. I'd say the arena was about 80% filled.

Extractions: These were just a few of the highlights at yesterday's figure skating exhibition, in which the top finishers at the Olympics entertain instead of compete. Gold medalist Tara Lipinski, wearing her yellow and blue short-program costume, used the same music from "Anastasia." She simply substituted the vocal version of "Journey to the Past." Once again, that infectious smile punctuated her performance and the audience wouldn't let her leave, standing and clapping until she returned for a portion of her free skate program to "The Rainbow." But Candeloro clearly was the show-stopper. He came on the ice in his Three Musketeers garb, prepared to do his "D'Ar tagnan" free skate program that lifted him to bronze. Poised to begin, the music came on: "Stay in' Alive" by the Bee Gees. So Candeloro did his best John Travolta. Then began five minutes of pure theatrics, from the sword fight that highlights the routine to Candeloro climbing over the sideboards to hug and kiss a spectator. Pairs champions Oksana Kazakova and Artur Dmitriev dedicated their encore to the Japanese fans, doing the traditional song "Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms).
