Search Figure Skating Paula Slater The women's event for the 2000 World Figure Skating Championships began with the Qualifying Free Skating on 29 March and ended with the free skate on 1 April. There were 45 competitors in all this year and 24 placements. It didn't look good for Michelle Kwan, the two-time world champion from the U.S., after the qualifying free skate which accounted for 20 percent of the total score. The American was third behind the two Russian skaters, Irina Slutskaya and Maria Butyrskaya. Kwan and Slutskaya both performed six triples without falling, however, five of the seven judges clearly favored Slutskaya's artistic performance over that of Kwan's. Meanwhile, in a separate group, Butyrskaya led the other program, tying with Slutskaya in front of Kwan by doing six triples as well. Only major flaw in her program was that she put her hand down on a double axel. In the short program, Butyrskaya skated to "

Extractions: [an error occurred while processing this directive] People who know me know I'm a big figure skating fan. There's something about it that really grabs my attention, and when I think about it I have to conclude that it's the combination of music and motion that holds me rapt, especially when it's done right I try not to be fanatical about any one skater. But, I do have favorites, and Maria is one of them. I've followed her career for some time, and this year was her best ever. She skated her heart out for that gold medal at Worlds, it was a deserved victory for her, and a vindication as well. Sometimes I get the feeling that she just doesn't know what kind of fan base she has here in America, so here's my attempt at doing something nice for her. I don't know she'll ever see this, but if she ever does, it'll be ready. Let me know how I'm doing: kestral@zipcon.net

Extractions: The third event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, the Sparkassen Cup on Ice, concluded in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday (results and standings attached). World champion Alexei Yagudin (RUS) won the short program in the men's competition. The first to skate, he presented a near flawless performance of his entertaining circus program with a huge triple axel/triple toeloop combination, a triple lutz and a double axel with fast, well-centred spins and complex footwork. Alexander Abt (RUS), the European bronze medallist who is fighting to win one of the three places in the Russian team for this season's Championships, attempted a quadruple toeloop but two-footed the landing. His technically challenging program included an unusual triple axel/triple loop combination but he again just missed a clean landing. Andrejs Vlascenko (GER) placed third ahead of France's Thierry Cerez. In the ladies' competition Elena Sokolova (RUS), seventh at the Olympics, placed first in the short program. Her jump combination was a triple lutz/double toeloop and she landed a clean triple loop. Her only error was a slip at the end of a fast straight line step sequence. Second was world bronze medallist Maria Butyrskaya (RUS), winner at Skate America, who fell on a triple lutz but performed a fast and complex program to earn high presentation marks. Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) placed third, landing a triple lutz/double toeloop as her combination jump and a triple flip.

Extractions: This year's winter sports season culminates with the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, and much of the attention will be focused on competitions in figure skating. Of course, everyone wants to know: Will Michelle Kwan win the gold? Many believe she was robbed of gold in Nagano when Tara Lipinski edged her out for the top spot. Kwan has won everything else but Olympic gold. If you're not sure which skaters to pay attention to at the Olympics, read on for a quick primer. The world of competitive figure skating includes both professional and amateur athletes. Tournaments on the professional circuit are TV viewer-friendly, featuring well-known older skaters, popular music and slick production values. In general, the pro skaters are yesterday's amateurs, and the amateurs are skating's hottest stars. The pros also have a little more freedom to come out of the closet, as Rudy Galindo did; the amateur scene remains deeply in denial. But the amateur meets offer the best suspense, skills and competitive thrills. For the skinny on whom to watch this season, see the guide below.

Pravda.RU:The Procession Of Victorious Russian Figure Skaters in our country that children s figure skating clubs are shows or, like Igor Bobrinand, recently, maria butyrskaya, create their own ice ballets reviews http://newsfromrussia.com/main/2004/03/29/53081_.html
Extractions: The procession of victorious Russian figure skaters The Russian figure skating school re-affirmed its title as the best school in the world at the world championship in Dortmund, Germany. Russian figure skaters won three out of four gold medals. Tatiana Totmianina and Maksim Marinin became champions in the pairs competition, Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov won the ice dance competition, and Yevgeny Plushenko won the men's event. This was the sixth time that Russians have accomplished the outstanding feat of winning three gold medals. They achieved the same results in 1975 (Colorado Springs), 1985 (Tokyo), 1992 (Oakland), 1998 (Minneapolis) and 2002 (Nagano). However, in 1999 in Helsinki, Russian figure skaters won four gold medals. Russian figure skating has a long history. Nearly 100 years ago, Russians achieved their first big success in this sport. In 1908, Nikolai Panin-Kolomensky, a famous Russian figure skater and a world and European champion, won a gold metal at the Olympics in London. After the 1917 revolution, in early Soviet times, figure skating was overlooked in Russia. This sport was considered aristocratic and expensive primarily because of the need to construct rinks with artificial ice. But in the 1950s, the Soviet Union had developed into world power in sport, and figure skating was promoted. Numerous children's figure skating clubs opened and ice skating rinks were built. As a result, in 1964, 56 years after Panin-Kolmenkin's victory, Soviet figure skaters Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov won the pairs title at the Olympics in Innsbruck. Four years later, they repeated their victory at the Grenoble Olympics. Since then, the laurels in figure skating have belonged to Soviet, and later Russian pairs. The glorious Irina Rodnina won Olympic gold three times (in 1972-1980) in pairs skating. Soviet pairs, too, became trendsetters in the ice dance competition in the 1970s. The skills of the legendary couple - Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov - are still marvelled by both experts and admirers all over the world.
Extractions: AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Not even the roars and shouts of the wildly patriotic crowd could disturb the serenity within Michelle Kwan. Sure, she heard the frenzied noise even before she skated onto the ice and found it inspiring. She captured Tuesday night's Olympic short program as much because of her calm as her desire to win one for her country. "I'm proud to be an American and I tried to skate from my heart, tried to make Americans proud," Kwan said after edging Russian rival Irina Slutskaya. "It was an incredible moment for me. "I am well prepared, in good shape, healthy. You've just got to feel you are fortunate already, before the start of the program. What I have done, no regrets. Just go out and have fun." The cool and relaxed Kwan led a strong showing by the Americans, with Sasha Cohen placing third and Sarah Hughes fourth heading into Thursday night's free skate, worth two-thirds of the total score.
