This is an index of 1000+ of my ice skating photos - from Champions on Ice, Stars on Ice, Evening with Champions, Ice Chips, [Improv Ice, ISCC Simsbury shows, and other 1998 - 2003 figure skating shows. Because I optimized all photos to under 30kb, most should load in 20 seconds or less. I also color corrected, sharpened, cropped and enlarged many photos for better viewing. To some, that may seem like a strange feeling. But I'm proud of it. I moved to American recently because I was invited to live in Simsbury, Connecticut, where they have built an ice rink for me and Victor [Petrenko, a fellow Ukrainian and figure-skating gold medalist]. It's where I practice now. MF: Because you had to overcome so many obstacle in your personal life and in the sport itself, a lot of people see as the Cinderella of skating. Are you tired of being thought of in this way? OB: No, because I actually like Cinderella. [laughs] But nobody calls me Cinderella. They call me "the swan." I started because I did my Olympic number to the music from Swan Lake.

Extractions: The life of sweet little girl was not so sweet. When Oksana was ten years old, her grandfather died, very unexpectedly. One year later her grandmother became very sick and died. Her life changed because a big part of her family was missing. In 1994 Oksana went to European Championships and won silver medal again. The most important time was coming up. It was the 1994 Olympic Winter Games. She began preparing herself for the most important competition in her life. Oksana had chosen a great piece of music, Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, for the short program. The time came for Olympic Games. Oksana skated the short program perfectly, but she was in the second place. It was a good spot... She had to get better scores from judges on the long program to win but she could not afford a single mistake. No...not for Oksana...Nothing could come between Oksana Baiul and the chance of winning the gold medal. When the time came to get ready to skate again, Oksana was given an Olympic-approved shot for pain. She skated her long program flawlessly. It was the best performance of that day. Oksana became an Olympic Champion at the age of 16. Her dream came true. She was very happy.

In recent years, a succession of ever-younger champions in women's figure skating has brought ever-greater speed and intensity to all facets of the sport: the spins, the jumps and the careers. These days, the trip from prodigy status to the professional ranks to the pasture often doesn't take very long. Still, the saga of Oksana Baiul seems almost too dizzying and melodramatic to be real. Her adult life has only just begun, yet Baiul has already experienced more happiness and heartbreak, triumph and tragedy than most mortals get in a lifetime. And so at the age of 22, Baiul is staging a comeback. "I've been through a lot and I'm only 22," she says. "I just turned 22 and I'm just a kid. A child. But on the other hand, I'm not."

She had a gold medal, adoring fans all over the world and a second chance after what could have been a deadly car crash. And yet she was dreadfully unhappy. "I think I had a nervous breakdown, because I was so out of control," she said Thursday. "I was so unhappy for the last couple of years, yes. Because of my skating, my situation, I felt like I was so alone in this world. It was so hard for me to take help from other people. "I decided, if I won't go to rehab, if I won't try to change my life, then I'll die soon," she said. "And I didn't want that. So that's why I changed my life. I just wanted to be a happy person, like everyone wants."

I got my ticket two weeks ago and got second row seats, halfway between center ice and one of the "non-lutz" corners, towards the skaters' entrance area. Last year, I was about six or seven rows from the top of the United Center :) so my viewing experience was much different this time around! Last year, it was neat to be able to see the ice coverage patterns of the skaters; this year, I was able to notice facial expressions, hand movements, and other details. It was also a bit scary watching a skater set up for a jump right in front of me. :)
