Extractions: T h e S t o r y o f S a s h a O n the ice, it's just Alexander Abt and the music. In practice, he improvises, enjoys and doesn't pay attention to anything that is going on around him. It doesn't matter if a classical piece or a modern song is played - Sasha (as he is called by his friends) can skate to every kind of music. He is the most musical skater since Viktor Petrenko, and everyone realizes this immediately. E ven before he finally was able to compete in the 1998 Europeans (where he won the Bronze medal), skating fans knew his name and talked about his special talent. Wherever he skated, he drew always the attention of the fans and the media as he did for example at the 1995 Skate America. U nfortunately, Abt's promising career was hindered by many injuries and also by unfair decisions at Russian Nationals. 1993 he finished fourth at the Nationals in St. Petersburg although he skated better than the more experienced Oleg Tataurov. In the 1998 Nationals in Moscow he was fourth again, although he delivered a strong free program whereas Alexei Yagudin faltered. H owever, Alexander Abt didn't leave and look for another country to compete for as others like Igor Pashkevitch did.
Alexander Abt in the United States, at the ice Castle International plagued with jump problems, his Free Skate was simply Mr. abt skates with the same dramatic flair seen in http://swpskating.com/sashaabt.html
Extractions: This fierce competitor has chosen to train in the United States, at the Ice Castle International Training Center. I was hoping this move would bring him out onto the local skating scene, and Sasha did not disappoint. Though his Short program was plagued with jump problems, his Free Skate was simply brilliant. Mr. Abt skates with the same dramatic flair seen in most Russian men, which I do enjoy. I understand that he is building an arsenal of quad jumps with which to assault to the top competitors this season. I truly enjoyed his performances at Golden West, and I do hope he repeats the favor next year. A trip to Hidden Valley would also be nice - Go Sasha!

His progress has been held back by several injuries which nearly ended his career. In the summer of 1996, he cut the muscle in his right thigh with his left blade when crashing into the border during an exhibition in Mexico. Following this accident he had to remain in hospital for weeks. He suffered from a sinus infection at Europeans 2001 and

Extractions: Russian Alexander Abt's career has not been easy. In his rise to the elite ranks, he suffered a number of serious setbacks, including hip injuries and knee surgeries, and he recently underwent surgery to remove cysts from his sinuses. But an accident in Mexico in 1996 proved his most serious challenge: he sliced his right thigh muscles with his own skate blade, forcing him to not only relearn all of his jumps, but even to walk. "It was almost like having a new leg," Abt recalled. At the time, his coach Rafael Arutunian said, "He has one leg that has been skating for many years, and the other leg has been skating for a year." But Abt prevailed and was soon back at the top of his game, winning bronze medals at the 1998 European Championships and at the last 2 Russian Nationals. He finished fourth at the 2001 European Championships, despite a sinus ailment that caused him to collapse after his free skate in the kiss and cry area. He finished eighth at the 2001 World Championships, then went home to Moscow for surgery on his sinuses. He and his coach have since moved to Lake Arrowhead, Calif., to train at the Ice Castle Training Center which has an altitude that should help him with his stamina throughout the Olympic season. Salt Lake City's altitude is not as high as Denver or Colorado Springs, but it is significant enough to make altitude training a plus.

Extractions: Missed you at Winter Camp! - Its OK - Join us for our 2003 Summer Camp Ice Castle Sale To Be Completed May 1 Ice Castle, Inc. announced today that the company will complete the final phase of its ownership change on May 1. Anthony Liu, current Ice Castle skater, will take over ownership of the facility. Liu is a six-time Australian National Champion who represented Australia in the 1998 and 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The facility had been subdivided into two parts, a figure skating training center and a camp, prior to being placed on the market last fall. The camp section was purchased by Kathy Farley and closed escrow last month. It is now being run as Arrowhead Ranch Outdoor Science School, an educational camp for children. Farley intends to expand the uses to include retreats for adults as well. The sale will end a historical skating presence for the Probst family in the mountains. Probst built their first rink surface, the Ice Castle at Blue Jay, in 1983 after the original Blue Jay outdoor ice rink closed in 1979. Probst skated at the old facility as a child, and her children learned to skate at the open-air rink. The Blue Jay facility was not rebuilt after a roof collapse in early 2001. Extractions: Edge Jumps Many people who watch figure skating on TV simply see a skater fling himself/herself into the air, twist a couple times, and land backwards on one skate. But all the jumps look kinda the same . . . what makes one jump more difficult than another? Glad you asked, because we've already written out the answers. In figure skating, there are two basic kinds of jumps: Toe Jump - this is when the skater uses the toe pick (the tiptoe of the skate) of one skate to vault up in the air Edge Jumps - this is when the skater takes off from a specific edge of a skate without the benefit of help from the other skate. A toe pick push-off isn't allowed. When talking about edges, skaters get very specific, saying things like "left back outside edge." In order to understand the edge terminology, you just need to break that statement down. " Left " refers to the foot . . . so there can be

Extractions: Televised December 3, 2000 on ABC The headliners at Nation's Cup were Evgeny Plushenko, the reigning Russian and European Champion, and Timothy Goebel, who was fresh off an upset win at Skate America over the reigning World Champion Alexei Yagudin. Plushenko was making his debut in the Grand Prix series at the Nation's Cup. Plushenko had matured much since last year, putting on muscle and looking less like an adolescent. Everyone had been talking about how different he looked in comparison to last year. Plushenko had something to prove at this event. Last year, Plushenko dominated the Grand Prix series and won the Grand Prix Finals (Alexei Yagudin had withdrawn due to injury). Plushenko even upset Yagudin at the Europeans last year for the European title. However, he bombed at the Worlds, and finished fourth, while Yagudin won his third straight world title. This year, Plushenko's goal was to win all the events, and especially the Worlds. He would begin the road to the World Championships at this event.
