"We've done this unanimously for the last five or six years," Commissioner Gary Bettman said in New York. "It gives teams and their fans certainty that they will remain in place. We are committed as a league to our small markets." Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa will receive aid of approximately $2.7 million per team. The revenues of Montreal and Toronto are too high to qualify for help. Canadian teams' expenses are all in U.S. dollars but their income is in Canadian dollars, leaving them at a disadvantage. On Tuesday, the Canadian dollar was worth 64 cents in U.S. currency. The league has given teams more than $50 million in aid in the past four or five years.
