To drop a question into the Mailbag click here or visit DenverPost.com's Avalanche Page Dear Adrian: I volunteer to write articles on high-school hockey for our local paper. When I submit articles, the sports editor changes every word; I don't think he knows much about hockey. In one article he changed a sentence to say, "Martinez scored an unassisted goal in the frame." My brothers (both hockey players) and I were wondering what a "frame" is. The editor said it was a bowling term for period, but period applies to other sports, too. I was wondering if you, a prominent sports journalist, have ever heard or used the term "frame" in the context of hockey?

Like many others who attracted attention with their offensive skills, Worrell was handed the role of defensive checker and intimidator upon breaking into the big time. He wants to improve his scoring ability but he knows his team needs him to use his 6-foot 6-inch, 235-pound body to control the boards, win the battles in the corners, crash the net, and provide behavioral modification to opponents who take liberties with his teammates.
Latest Call To Check Violence In Hockey Sounds Familiar McSorley s hockey career was finished by the time he went to trial. But even Avalanchewinger peter worrell, Colorado s enforcer, said what Bertuzzi did is http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04073/285242.stm
Extractions: The first call for reforms in hockey came after a player struck an opponent over the head with his stick, killing him. That case occurred in Canada in 1905. Violence in hockey has been a simmering topic since, boiling over when an attack threatens a player's life or livelihood. That happened last week after Vancouver Canucks winger Todd Bertuzzi broke the neck of Colorado Avalanche rookie forward Steve Moore. Bertuzzi attacked Moore from behind, punched him, then drove him face-first into the ice. The National Hockey League suspended Bertuzzi, an all-star, for at least the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs. Moore is in a rehabilitation hospital, under the care of neurosurgeons. With each man sidelined and the NHL under a media floodlight for all the wrong reasons, calls for change have begun again. Kevin Wamsley, director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario, said the NHL long has embraced a level of violence that can encourage attacks such as Bertuzzi's.
Extractions: ART DORRINGTON TOOK A break from practice recently and pondered this question: Which hurt more, being called a really nasty slur on the ice or getting a two-handed chop fight across the wrists? "That's a good question," Dorrington answers. "I guess it depends on how bad the slur was." Dorrington, who became the first black player to sign a contract with an NHL team when he joined the New York Rangers organization in 1950, spends almost all his time and a lot of his money running his own hockey foundation in Atlantic City, N.J., giving 30 or so disadvantaged youths at a time the chance to take to the ice. The irony of the question isn't lost on Dorrington. The fact that Dorrington had to stop and think about his answer speaks volumes. It says that in a sport where shrugging off a busted nose or a fractured finger or cranky back is part of the culture, where players don't miss a shift with injuries that would send civilians to the hospital, simple words can be the most painful thing of all. They can sting more than an open-ice hit ever could.

"I'm a four-year overnight success you could say," Shewchuk said yesterday after the women's team's first on-ice session at a Sarnia training camp. "It's been a long time in the making. It's been a long hard road, but I am just so excited." The native of Saint-Laurent, Que., felt like quitting in 1998 when she was a late cut for the team that won a silver medal at the Olympics.

It happens in hockey too, like when the Colorado Avalanche picked up one beaut of a deal on Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne $1.2 million and $5.8 million, respectively. Kariya's deal places him under the league average, which will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent again after next season. That price also helped Selanne and Kariya fit into the Avalanche's salary structure. Above, the former Anaheim teammates celebrate after scoring a recent goal. The Colorado Avalanche fell far short of their goal last season, losing a shocking Game 7 to the Minnesota Wild, blowing a 3-1 series lead, their second time in six seasons. UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (05/19/02) Berehowsky ended the 20012002 hockey season riding high hoping to maintain the your-facestyle of game, it s bound to happen, said left-winger peter worrell. http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/2002/200226.shtml
Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Daneyko not ready to retire One certainly gets the feeling Kenny Daneyko is not ready or willing to have his No. 3 retired to the Continental Airlines Arena rafters just yet, or anytime soon. Reduced to a part-time role on a team that struggled mightily during the first couple of months of this past season, the New Jersey Devils defenseman disputed claims his performance has slipped. "I'm no different than I was last June when I was one of the guys in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In five or six months you don't lose your position as a go-to guy," said the 37-year-old after sitting out three of four games as a healthy scratch. "For my role and what I do, it's going to take a lot longer (for his game to significantly deteriorate). It's too short of a time. I believe I have two more years left in me after this one. In fact, I know it. I'm not injured and I'm not banged up." Daneyko has one more season remaining on his contract, but there was increased speculation that he might not end his career with the Devils, the team for which he has played his entire NHL career. "There is nothing to read into this, other than the six defensemen we have played well," said GM Lou Lamoriello. "No question, when push comes to shove, Kenny will be a very valuable person."

Extractions: Andreychuk not done yet Discreetly, but not silently, the New Jersey Devils wondered whether Dave Andreychuk was finished. As he struggled all of 1997-1998, it was suggested the 500-goal scorer had lost his scoring touch. But if Devils' coach Robbie Ftorek's looser reins have proved anything this current season, it is that Andreychuk does still have it. After scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers before Christmas, Andreychuk actually shared the team lead in goals with Petr Sykora. "He's doing the things he has always done well," Ftorek said. Even more impressive was the fact Andreychuk, 35, was in double figures in goals (he finished the recently concluded 1998-1999 regular season with 15 goals), despite missing several games with a bruised sternum following a hit from Florida Panthers' forward Peter Worrell and assorted other physical ailments later on. "I don't know who was concerned. I wasn't concerned," Andreychuk said. "It was a while before I felt back to normal. My first week back I didn't play great, but then I felt pretty good. Before that, I couldn't do too much. I feel more confident." At the time, some three months into this season, Andreychuk was being mentioned among the top candidates for the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance. He basically played in some degree of pain all season long.

Worrell and Moore scored their first goals of the season, leading the Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. One of the top offensive teams in the NHL when healthy, the Avalanche rely heavily on Sakic and Forsberg, two of the league's elite players. Worrell and Moore are role players who entered this Northwest Division matchup with a combined two assists in 31 games. But they provided the scoring as the Avalanche (2-3-4) won for just the second time in nine games. "Our top two lines have been doing a lot of scoring and we mostly take care of the physical and defensive play," Moore said. "It's nice to chip in offensively as well." "You need production out of all your lines and fortunately, we were able to get a couple out of those guys tonight," Avalanche coach Tony Granato added.
