Dallas also acquired Columbus' second-round pick, the 32nd overall choice. The Stars have been looking for a goalie since late May, when general manager Doug Armstrong said veteran Ed Belfour wouldn't be re-signed. Belfour will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Tugnutt signed a four-year, $10 million contract with the Blue Jackets before the 2000-01 season. The trade gives the Blue Jackets two picks in the first round of the draft to be held Saturday and Sunday in Toronto. The Blue Jackets also have the third overall pick. "The decision to make this deal was a difficult one, but one that will allow us to continue to improve as an organization," Columbus general manager Doug MacLean said. Tugnutt, 34, was one of the main reasons why the Blue Jackets earned a surprisingly high 71 points as an expansion team two years ago, but his performance slipped last season. Marc Denis got more playing time in goal as the Blue Jackets stumbled to 57 points, fewest in the Western Conference.

More Stars Guerin's sixth career hat trick provided most of the offense as the Stars rolled past Columbus 4-2 at American Airlines Center. The Stars are unbeaten in their last 12 at home and 5-0-1 on a franchise-long, eight-game homestand. For Tugnutt, Wednesday's game was about getting a win and restoring any confidence his teammates and coaches had lost in him. Tugnutt called the last two months "very tough" as he worked through a groin injury and tried to regain his form in two stints in the minors. Wednesday was Tugnutt's second win of the season and first since Oct. 29. And it helped erase the memory of getting pulled after giving up two goals in 16 minutes against Phoenix on Jan. 2, his last start before Wednesday.
