Michael Holley of the Boston Globe correctly points out that Joe Thornton's retirement threat cannot be taken seriously. But Holley goes on to offer some rather curious advice to the Bruins' captain. According to Holley, it is not Thornton's place to evaluate NHL officiating: "Almost anyone can tell you that the game is not as fluid as it should be. That same person can tell you that a player calling out the lords of the game is certainly not the way to fix it." Why not? The only other people offering honest opinions about the refereeing are sports writers. Does anyone believe the league is going to listen to them? Holley goes on to suggest that if Thornton wants to be a real team leader, fulfilling his obligations as captain, he should refrain from saying anything interesting at all:
Extractions: "It concerns me when two of our league's top young talents believe that there is a problem with the way our games are officiated. We want to ensure that our league is completely fair to every single one of its players. In particular, it is my responsibility to ensure the overall quality and consistency of our officiating. I will commit to investigating the concerns of these two individuals as thoroughly as possible and my feedback will be issued at the appropriate time." This is the statement that SHOULD have been released by the NHL's Vice President of Operations, Colin Campbell, in response to Joe Thornton's recent plea for NHL officials to end the double-standard that he believes exists with regards to how penalties are called against skilled players of larger physical stature. At the very least, this should have been the attitude that was conveyed. Boston Bruins superstar Joe Thornton recently complained on national TV in Canada that on-ice officials have created a double-standard that allows defending players to hook, hold, slash, and obstruct larger, skilled players as a means of stopping them. In very candid fashion, he threatened to leave the National Hockey League after this season if nothing is done to improve the (perceived) situation. Thornton's complaints were later verified and expanded upon by Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla. Both Thornton and Iginla are power forwards that possess the uncommon ability to score as well as look after themselves physically.
Extractions: The dust is accumulating in the Bruins locker room and the ice has thawed. It wasn't supposed to be this way. As Boston defenseman Nick Boynton put it, the Bruins "blew it". They may have finally left management no choice but to blow up this team and get to the root of what has prevented a talented core of young veterans from finally taking the next step. Luckily for them, they need to look no further than their first round loss to Montreal, a series in which the Bruins basically gave general manager Mike O'Connell a blueprint of what he does not want his team to be, but at the same time provided some ideas for what they could do to reach the next level.

Extractions: Home Page Bruins Player Joe Thornton Visits BHS Joe Thornton, the Boston Bruins star center and team captain, visited 100 young hockey fans at Brockton High School on November 12th, sharing his experiences and advice for living life to the fullest on and off the ice. During a one-hour question and answer session, Thornton outlined his athletic history. From his introduction to hockey at age 4 to his junior high school days on the football field, Thornton always took care of his body and worked hard to improve his skills in every sport he played. As a teenager, he joined the Canadian junior hockey league and was then drafted number one by the Bruins in 1997 as a 17-year-old. As soon as I put on my first pair of skates, I really fell in love with it, said Thornton. Canadian boys, they live on the ice, thats for sure. The 6 4 Thornton shared his training regime, talked about his less-than-spectacular social life and good naturedly answered a barrage of who would you rather play with, questions. Jimmy Hatch, a Brockton High School junior who plays right wing on the Junior Varsity Hockey team, said meeting Thornton was an exciting opportunity.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins BRUINS NOTEBOOK By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 1/25/2004 Would he or wouldn't he? That was the intrigue yesterday at the morning skate surrounding Bruins captain Joe Thornton , who had surgery Thursday to repair his fractured right cheekbone. He was on the ice at the FleetCenter, participating in the pregame workout, and said he was determined to talk coach Mike Sullivan into letting him play last night against the Florida Panthers. ADVERTISEMENT Thornton was sporting a full cage, identical to what college players wear, and looked comfortable during drills. The speculation that Thornton would play was fueled by Sullivan's reaction when asked if there would be any lineup changes. Sullivan went from a serious face to laughing, saying it would be a "game-time decision," but admitted afterward the captain had no shot of playing. It was decided that Thornton needed more time to mend, so he served as a spectator during last night's 2-1 loss, missing his third game. There's a strong possibility he will return Tuesday when the Bruins visit the Islanders. Thornton said he saw a replay of the titanic punch the Rangers' Eric Lindros threw that gave him a nasty black eye and fractured his facial bone. His momentum during the fight swung his head down at the same time Lindros's fist was coming straight up.

Bruins MICHAEL HOLLEY By Michael Holley, Globe Columnist, 11/12/2003 Did he mean it? Of course not. You're going to have to wait a while before you thank Joe Thornton for the memories, watch him place his No. 19 next to Raymond Bourque's 77, and send him away with tears and goodbyes. ADVERTISEMENT I'm guessing we're at least 10 years away from that. Igor Larionov still is being paid to skate, and he'll be 43 next month. No one is asking Mark Messier to leave New York, and he's 42. Thornton takes jabs as if he works in a ring rather than a rink, but walking away at 24 would trump Sandy Koufax and Jim Brown by five years. Who knew Joe was ready for a company watch, a box of inedible chocolates, and a VIP spot in a shuffleboard tournament? All of this became a topic when excerpts of a Thornton television interview began to trickle into Boston. On Monday, the Bruins captain told Canada's popular TSN that the constant on-the-job punishment high-sticking, clutching, grabbing, etc. has him frustrated. He said his back is killing him, even though he hasn't missed a practice or game this season. He said he sometimes wonders whether all this abuse is worth it. Put another way, he hinted at retirement.
