Thomas Nominee For Masterton Red Wings forward steve thomas has been nominated for the Masterton Trophy bythe Detroit chapter of the Professional hockey Writers Association. Why? http://www.freep.com/sports/redwings/wcorn30_20040330.htm
Extractions: FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Red Wings forward Steve Thomas has been nominated for the Masterton Trophy by the Detroit chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Why? "Because I'm older than dirt," Thomas joked. Well, Thomas is 40. But that's only part of it. The Masterton goes to the NHL player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." Each PHWA chapter nominates someone from the team it covers, the association elects the winner at the end of the regular season, and the trophy is presented at the NHL awards in June. Wings captain Steve Yzerman won it last year after coming back from major knee surgery (and can't win it again). Thomas hasn't come back from anything like that. But after coming within a game of finally winning his first Stanley Cup his Anaheim team lost Game 7 of the finals to New Jersey last year he came back for a 20th NHL season to take another stab at it. And although his season has been up and down, his attitude hasn't.

Extractions: FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITERS CALGARY, Alberta Coach Dave Lewis scratched defenseman Jiri Fischer for the first time this season Monday night, with the Red Wings facing elimination in their second-round series with the Flames. "He's not playing with a lot of confidence right now," Lewis said. Fischer said he was "really surprised" and "really disappointed," but he also said Lewis' assessment was "pretty accurate." Fischer, 23, made mistakes that led to the winning goals in Games 1 and 5, and he was minus-2 for the playoffs, second-worst on the team. Asked if the series had been a struggle for him, he said: "Personally, I wouldn't feel it was a struggle. It wasn't as good as I would like it to be. But . . . " Fischer made strides in 2001-02, then suffered a torn knee ligament and missed most of last season. "This year, it never clicked like it did a couple years ago for some reason," Fischer said. "This year was a roller coaster."
Extractions: It's quite often rumoured that a player in the National Hockey League who is 30-years of age or more has reached the twilight of his career. Being 35-years of age, Steve Thomas might be considered one of those players fitting that adage. But judging by the performance put forth by the former Markham resident this season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he seems to have found the fountain of youth. Through 51 games, Thomas has amassed a team-leading 20 goals and 22 assists. He's also the second-leading scorer this season on a revitalized Maple Leafs team that is presently occupying first place in the Northeast Division. Toronto Maple Leafs left winger Steve Thomas still has fond memories of his days playing minor hockey in Markham. Thomas recently took time from his hectic schedule to visit Centennial Arena to sign a few autographs at a Markham Waxers Junior A game. "I feel great. I feel like I've got the same legs that I had 10-years ago," Thomas said after the club took to the ice in a recent practice session at their future Air Canada Centre home.

As a native Californian myself, I know narcissism when I see it, and I'm not going to let Joan Didion have all the fun. Where was I from? As with all of Woodward's books, it is a compelling and breezy read. A good sign about it is that I doubt its contents would surprise either Bush's supporters or his detractors were they to read (or re-read) it today; the book strikes me as a basically accurate rendering that can be interpreted in a number of ways.

The playoffs are a bear, there's no other way to put it, writes hockey columnist Mike Heika . You are asked to perform at somewhere near 100 percent efficiency for two months. Yes, you get breaks, but even those start to diminish as things get tougher and tougher. The Stanley Cup Finals are in marathon mode now, and the two finalist teams are feeling it. Game 6 is Saturday at Calgary (7 p.m., Ch. 8). Calgary leads the series, 3-2.
