Extractions: SportsLine.com wire reports ANAHEIM, Calif. The high-flying Anaheim Mighty Ducks are heading to their first conference finals after disposing of another favorite. Goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the Ducks move on. (AP) Defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh scored with 1:06 remaining in a wild third period Monday night to lift Anaheim to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars. The victory gave the Ducks an improbable 4-2 series win over top-seeded Dallas in the Western Conference semifinals after seventh-seeded Anaheim swept defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit in the opening round. Steve Thomas, who had a goal and two assists, said "surreal" doesn't begin to describe what's going on with the Ducks. "Surreal is an understatement," said Thomas, acquired from Chicago at the March 11 trading deadline. "Beating Detroit was an accomplishment. Now, to beat the Stars, it is amazing." Ducks rookie coach Mike Babcock thought so, too.

Extractions: Ken Klee has been patiently waiting for the suitable contract from the perfect team since July 1st. Klee's agent has been telling teams that Klee wants a 2 year deal, and will not settle for anything less. Klee should be attractive to the teams that would need the services of a reasonably experienced defencemen. The teams that have been reported to be interested are Atlanta, Carolina and Toronto. Carolina has dropped in the running since they signed Bughner and Markov, so they are not interested. Chances are that Klee will hold out well into the season, and if the Leafs are unhappy with thier prospect defencemen, Klee could be a welcome addition. Steve Thomas is the most surprising veteran to not sign with a team yet. His playoff run with Anaheim was admirable, and he definately improved his value by playing all the way into the stanley cup finals. I really dont see any reason why he would not be signed, but the most likely reason is his age. At 40 years old, his body is very close to the end of the line, and perhaps the teams are putting thier prospects into play to give them some playing time before the lockout year, in which many players might retire, and leave holes for the prospects to fill. I could expect Steve to sign either in November-January with a struggling team, or sign at the trade deadline with a playoff contender, in need of veteran experience.

Women's Sports Basketball Crew Cross Country Field Hockey Gymnastics Ice Hockey Indoor Track Lacrosse Outdoor Track Skiing Soccer Swimming/Diving Tennis Volleyball Men's Sports Basketball Cross Country Football Ice Hockey Indoor Track Outdoor Track Skiing Soccer Swimming/Diving Tennis January 19, 2003 AMHERST, Mass. - New Hampshire scored two goals in a four-minute span in the third period, and then held off a UMass rally late in the game to defeat the Minutemen, 4-3, in Hockey East action on Sunday. The loss, UMass' third in a row, drops its record to 13-10-1 overall and 7-8-0 in Hockey East, good for a tie for fourth place. UMass wasted little time getting on the board. Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) fired a shot at UNH goalie Mike Ayers that kicked off to the left that Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) rebounded and stuck the puck under the crossbar for his 12th goal of the year, just 51 seconds into the contest. Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) also assisted on the goal. The goal for Mauldin earned him his 50th career point at UMass. However, New Hampshire answered midway in the first period when Sean Collins capped off a 2-on-1 break, by sticking the puck into the back of the net past a diving Michael Waidlich (Millers Falls, Mass.) at the 13:03 mark to knot the score at 1-1. The Wildcats then went up 2-1 late in the second period, when Nathan Martz scored in a pile-up in front of the net. Martz poked the puck out of Waidlich's glove as he had it covered, and slid it into the back of the net at the 17:10 mark of second stanza.
