Extractions: First and foremost has to be the poor early season performance of goalie J.S. Giguere. He was wildly inconsistent and it seemed the rest of the league had figured out the ways to score on him. It's possible that his getting married distracted him. Maybe the enormity of what he accomplished last spring finally caught up to him. Either way, he had a forgettable first half. In the past few weeks, however, he has regained his playoff MVP form. Unfortunately, it looks like it's too little, too late. Injuries have also plagued the Ducks' season. While nowhere near as bad as local rival Los Angeles, the Ducks started the season without veteran Keith Carney. Things didn't improve when Sandis Ozolinsh was lost to a strained shoulder injury. In addition, Rob Niedermayer missed all but one game in December and has been on and off the injured list since. Without these regulars, Anaheim hasn't been able to settle into where they left off last season. Despite leading the team in scoring, Sergei Fedorov is only now settling in with the team and showing what made him successful in Detroit. As the season progressed, Fedorov has become what the Ducks were looking for when they signed him as a free agent. There have been bright spots, though. The exceptional play of Martin Gerber has kept this season from being abysmal. Vaclav Prospal, while slow out of the gate, has been a force as the season has wound down and is proving that he can play outside of Tampa Bay. Joffrey Lupul has also played well in his rookie campaign, keeping the future bright in Orange County.
Extractions: It's a Friday night in Los Angeles, the second to last game of the season, and the Kings are en route to a 3-2 home loss to the Calgary Flames. L.A's season is over. The opportunity to lock up a playoff spot has passed this team by, and they are on their way to a team record for consecutive losses. This team will finish the year one game under .500. How about the fans? They are beside themselves in disbelief over the complete meltdown the Kings have had in the last ten games. As I sit in my seat at Staples Center, lump firmly lodged in my throat trying to hold back the growing urge to hurl obscenities in the direction of this humiliated, broken team, I try to rationalize what happened and where it all went wrong. Is goaltending to blame? Is it because the healthy players came back too late in the season? Why are the special teams so bad? In the midst of all this, I think about pride, because that is all this team and its fans have left. It was the only reason people continued to show up after the team was eliminated from the postseason on March 29th. It was the only reason the team continued to play, and Andy Murray continued to coach. Just like Sean Avery said the week before, "we just play for our pride, play for our fans." It was enough surprisingly to make me feel good. That is, until this Ducks fan showed up. A Ducks fan? Apparently he wasn't informed that the opponent tonight was Calgary, and the Ducks had concluded their business with the Kings on a losing note March 14th. Of course, maybe this man had free time to take in another pro product since his team was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention eons ago.

Czechs Win First-ever Ice Hockey Gold, 1-0 Over Russia disappointment and frustration Sunday, winning its firstever ice hockey gold medal aslap shot off the glove of Russian goalie mikhail shtalenkov into the http://www.shinmai.co.jp/oly-eng/19980222/0004.htm
Extractions: 13:45 CZE 1-0 RUS The Czech Republic ended 30 years of Olympic disappointment and frustration Sunday, winning its first-ever ice hockey gold medal with a 1-0 triumph over traditional rival Russia at the Big Hat ice arena. Defenseman Petr Svoboda scored at 8:08 of the third period and then combined with the other Czech defenders to shut down Russia's high-powered offense as the Czech Republic also won its first gold medal of the 18th Olympic Winter Games in Nagano. Svoboda's goal came off a face-off in the middle of the third period as the left-handed defender drilled a slap shot off the glove of Russian goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov into the upper left-hand corner of the net. ''Nobody gave us a chance but we believed in each other from the beginning of the tournament. We knew that if there was a problem we had Hasek behind us. It's a great feeling because we won against the best teams Canada, the U.S. and Russia,'' said Svoboda. Czech goaltender Dominik Hasek, who has been credited with carrying the Czech team almost single-handedly into the final, stopped 20 shots, but was largely unchallenged in the last two periods as the defense kept the Russians in disarray.

Extractions: 18:45 RUS 7-4 FIN Pavel Bure put on a goal-scoring clinic Friday, leading Russia to a 7-4 victory over Finland and setting up a showdown with the Czech Republic for the gold medal in the men's ice hockey tournament of the Nagano Olypmic Winter Games. Bure, of the Vancouver Canucks, scored five goals three on breakaways lifting the Russians to a 3-0 lead at the Big Hat ice arena in the first 21 minutes and then adding two goals with 4 minutes remaining. In Sunday's championship final, however, Bure and his teammates will meet Dominik Hasek, who stopped 24 shots against Canada's star-studded lineup, to give the Czech Republic a 2-1 shoot-out victory over the pre-tournament favorite. The match-up for the gold medal comes as a surprise to many who had figured that the first Olympics featuring the stars of the North American National Hockey League (NHL) would come down to a showdown between Canada and the United States. Asked about the unexpected gold medal game, Russian coach Vladimir Yurzinov said, ''I think it is very gratifying because hopefully no one will look down at European-style hockey. We will instead be treated with respect.''
