Extractions: ORONO, Maine. The Maine mens ice hockey team had two goals by senior Colin Shields as they defeated Merrimack 2-1 on Friday night in front of 4,608 fans at Alfond Arena. Maine takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Maine, ranked second in the nation, is now 27-7-3 overall. Merrimack is 11-18-6 overall. We got lucky tonight, said Maine head coach Tim Whitehead. Merrimack outworked and outplayed us in the first period. I am really impressed with their team. We got stronger as the game moved on, playing more defensively and limited their chances. I am really proud of the guys on the fourth line as they really gave us a lift tonight. It will be even tougher tomorrow night to get the same result. In the first period, with Prestin Ryan (Arcola, Saskatchewan) in the penalty box, Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 7:29 to give the Black Bears the lead. Still on the power play, Merrimack responded with a goal by Tim Reidy just over a minute later at 8:34 in the period. He was assisted by Matt Johnson and Nick Pomponio. Maine and Merrimack ended the period with five shots each. Maine picked up the intensity on both ends of the ice in the second period. At 13:23 in the period, each team was handed out several penalties for hitting after the whistle. With the teams four-on-four, passes from Tom Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wisc.) and Steve Mullin (Cartwright, Manitoba) found Shields who put it in for the goal at 13:43. Maine outshot the Warriors ten to six in the period Despite outshooting Merrimack twelve to four in the third period, the Black Bears could not add to the lead and took the first game of the series 2-1.

Extractions: ORONO, Maine The Maine mens ice hockey team held on for a 3-2 win over Providence College on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,641 fans at Alfond Arena. Maine scored three goals in a five-minute span of the first period by Derek Damon, Colin Shields and Steve Mullin. Maine, ranked third in the nation, is now 22-6-3 overall and are second in Hockey East with a 13-4-2 conference record. With the win Maine will host quarterfinals of the Hockey East Championships. Providence is 14-10-6 overall and 6-9-5 in Hockey East. We had good command of the game going into the third period, said Maine head coach Tim Whitehead. Providence got a goal early in the third and they got the momentum. Frank Doyle was tremendous as he was steady, focused and determined to keep it 3-2. Providence fought to the end and they had an opportunity to tie the game. I expect a very similar game tomorrow night. The Friars got on the board first when Stephen Wood scored from the top of the slot 1:40 into the game. He was assisted by Dinos Stamoulis and Peter Zingoni. Maine responded with a power play goal by Derek Damon (Bangor, Maine), with assists by Michel Leveille (Levis, Quebec) and Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine) at 13:55 in the period. The Black Bears continued the offensive pressure when Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) put in a rebounded shot for the goal at 11:09. Leveille and Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) had the assists. Maine took a 3-1 lead when Steve Mullin (Cartwright, Manitoba) scored his first goal of the season with 9:13 remaining in the period as Jon Jankus (Stoney Creek, Ontario) and Dustin Penner (Winkler, Manitoba) got the assists. Maine had a 15-8 lead on shots in the first period.

Extractions: HOME NEWS ARCHIVE A-2002-06-25-2 BOSTON (June 25, 2002) - The Boston Bruins obtained goalie Steve Shields from Anaheim for a draft pick, a sign that they may allow goalie Byron Dafoe to leave as a free agent. Tuesday's trade brought the Mighty Ducks a third-round pick in next year's draft. Shields, who played in 33 games last season, could have become a restricted free agent on July 1 but agreed to terms of a two-year contract with Boston. No other details were announced. Dafoe can become an unrestricted free agent, and management was disappointed with his play in the playoffs. In his fifth season with the Bruins, Dafoe had a 3.19 goals against average in six first-round games against Montreal, which won the series 4-2. During the regular season, Dafoe had a 2.21 GAA and a 35-26-3 record in 64 games. Shields, 29, was 9-20-2 with a 2.67 GAA as a backup to Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who had a 2.13 GAA and 20-25-6 record in 53 games.
