Extractions: Always My No. 1 Goalie Despite the fact he's no longer a Shark, I still have a thing for Steve Shields. He's damn cute in a European GQ sort of way. Those deep, dark eyes. That tall, strong build. The sexy perpetual five o'clock shadow. If anyone's going to be a hottie on a hockey team, it's the goalies because they wear a full mask and thus retain all their teeth. But Shields just started out gorgeous. He's not the world's best goalie, but he's easily the world's most handsome. The picture above-left is Steve Shields at Sharkfest 2000, taken by either me or my husband. Above-right is a rather crappy picture of me with Shields at the autograph table. Tho' even with his eyes closed, he still looks pretty tasty. Me on the other hand, I just look plain dorky! When I play goalie for my husband's inline hockey team, my motto is "What Would Shieldsy Do?" See, I'm a terrible goalie. I can't possibly aim to be as good as Nabokov (who's clearly the Second Coming of Patrick Roy). Or even Kipper, for that matter. But I can dream of being as inconsistently stellar as the Shark's old #31. Pity there wasn't a 31 jersey for me in our league. To the left is the best pic of Steve ever (nicked from elsewhere online). I

Extractions: I didn't start going to hockey games until January of 1997, so I missed Steve's stint in the American Hockey League (the league my hometown team is a member of). It wasn't until the 1997 Stanley Cup playoffs that I saw him play. Needless to say I was impressed (no, not just visually). He had a really rough job handed to him when Dominik Hasek couldn't play. He had played in only 13 games before coming in during the playoffs. He performed admirably, and was involved in one of the more exciting moments of the playoffs...the goalie fight with Garth Snow. That's when the madness began... Oh Eek!! I can't even believe it...this website was mentioned in ESPN: The Magazine! How hilarious is that? I was at a Cincinnati Mighty Ducks game and my friend Theresa called me screeching into my cell phone about how my web site made a national publication. Needless to say, I nearly choked when she told me which one. I scanned the little blurb about it, you can check it out here I'm Not Steve!

Traded to the San Jose Sharks along with a 1998 fourth-round draft choice. The Sabres got goaltender Kay Whitmore, a 1998 second-round draft choice and future considerations. Signed a two year $1.3 million contract with San Jose on July 13, 1998. Traded to Anaheim with Jeff Friesen and future considerations for Teemu Selanne on March 5, 2001 Traded to the Boston Bruins for a third round draft pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Agreed to terms on a 2 year contract with Boston. These are just some random facts that didn't fit anywhere else, so I thought I'd make a separate page for them.

As long as everyone is healthy and all their kids are healthy it makes it a lot easier to come to work and a lot more enjoyable,'' said Shields [when asked what he'd like to give the Bruins organization for Christmas]. Source: Joe Gordon, The Boston Herald Goalie Steve Shields, a Toronto native, looked forward to hitting the highways on the holidays. "Generally Christmas was always a time where we'd go away to a big tournament right after Christmas, so that's what I'd look forward to most. When you're young and you get to go away on the road and you get to travel on the bus it's great. You're with all your friends and you get to get away and feel like a big leaguer,'' Shields said.

Buffalo grabbed Shields in the fifth round (101st overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Shields won the 1996 Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans, giving up 16 goals in 18 playoff games. The goaltender earned his first NHL win Dec. 23, 1995, downing the San Jose Sharks. Three seasons later, on June 18, 1998, he joined the Sharks, moving to San Jose with a Draft pick for Kay Whitmore and a pair of selections. The Sharks gave Shields his first starting job during the 1999-00 season and he responded by recording the team's second-best save-percentage in history (.911). HE was dealt to Anaheim during the 2001 season as part of the package for Teemu Selanne. Shields was traded to the Boston Bruins for a Draft choice after the 2001-02 campaign. Before coming to the NHL, Shields played college hockey at the University of Michigan. He left the school as a Hobey Baker finalist. He also ranked second in career NCAA victories with 111.

Extractions: Last updated Wednesday, 14-Apr-04 02:54:08 EDT "Shields was acquired by San Jose prior to the 1998 expansion draft and performed exceptionally well. After 37 appearances, Shields even outperformed Vernon , but was once again a spectator come playoff time. Shields is at the age when most goaltenders begin to shine. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Shields covers a lot of net physically and intimidates the opposition with it. Shields is on the verge of becoming a solid No. 1 backstop. If not in 1999-2000, then surely by the following season." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 216) "A big goalie, Shields covers a great part of the net and intimidates shooters. Formerly Dominik Hasek 's backup in Buffalo, he learned by watching the best in the biz and steppe din with relative ease when traded to San Jose. Finally a No. 1 goalie in the NHL, he played in 68 games [sic] last season. Shields enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten streak in March [?], which prompted the Sharks to trade Mike Vernon to Florida. Shields has never looked back. He has the ability to get white-hot, which he has done on more than one occasion in the past."
