Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins BRUINS 2, ISLANDERS 2 By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 1/28/2004 UNIONDALE, N.Y. Since the halfway mark of the season, the Bruins have emphasized just how precious every point in the standings is to their chase for a playoff spot. ADVERTISEMENT Last night, they managed to salvage one against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum in the front half of a home-and-home series that concludes tomorrow night at the FleetCenter. With 1:57 remaining in the third period, left wing P.J. Axelsson took a feed from defenseman Jiri Slegr and beat goalie Rick DiPietro to pull into a 2-2 tie, sending it into overtime. And that's the way it stayed. The Bruins are winless in three games (0-2-1) and have scored just five goals in that span. The Islanders are unbeaten in three (2-0-1). One look at the ferocious battle going on in the Eastern Conference standings was enough motivation for both teams to want to find a way to carve out a victory. The Bruins, particularly in the last two losses, have struggled with their starts and had a difficult time finding the back of the net. They got a boost last night when captain Joe Thornton returned to the lineup after missing three games with a fractured right cheekbone. Thornton, who wore a cage to protect his face, earned an assist on Boston's first goal.
Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins BRUINS 3, ISLANDERS 3 By Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff, 1/4/2004 Rarely ahead by two goals in any game this season, the Bruins last night found a two-goal lead simply too hot to handle. ADVERTISEMENT How hot? So hot that they ultimately had to settle for a 3-3 tie with the Islanders before a crowd of 16,408 at the FleetCenter, squandering their chance to win back-to-back games for the first time since mid-November. Staked to a 3-1 lead when Sandy McCarthy drilled in a 40-foot slapper at 2:40 of the third period, the Bruins appeared to have their second straight win in the bank. But as McCarthy was celebrating his goal, rookie Shaone Morrisonn could be seen making his way down the runway at the side of the Bruins bench. No word was immediately available regarding the towering defenseman's condition, but he took a couple of heavy hits to the upper body at the start of the period. He was out for the rest of the night. Only 9:10 following Big Mo's departure, the pesky Islanders had it tied, 3-3. Morrisonn's absence was obvious, the Boston defense often scrambling to get the puck out of its end.
