Extractions: The Tampa Bay Lightning feature some excellent forwards on two high-flying lines, including the likes of league leading scorer and prime Hart Trophy candidate Martin St. Louis, who has had a spectacular season. Also in this group are Brad Richards, Cory Stillman, Fredrik Modin and Ruslan Fedotenko, who have each played some of the best hockey of their careers this season. They also feature Vincent LeCavalier, who may not have had a great season by his standards, but still put up the kind of numbers that nearly anyone else in the league would take. Captain Dave Andreychuk put up yet another 20-goal season and provides some scoring depth to this talented but a bit top-heavy group of forwards. The New York Islanders feature a somewhat less skilled but more balanced attack. At their best, the Islanders can roll four lines with a similar skill level. While the Lightning have excellent speed up front, the Islanders bring some considerable size to the party with the likes of Calder Trophy candidate Trent Hunter, Oleg Kvasha, Alexei Yashin and Dave Scatchard. The Islanders first line of Yashin, Kvasha and Mariusz Czerkawski has been an all-or-nothing proposition all season, either they score goals by the handful or are completely invisible. Mark Parrish is one of the streakier goal-scorers around and has been hot since returning from a high-ankle sprain. The Isles' fastest skater Jason Blake will miss the series due to a similar injury. Key mid-season acquisition Cliff Ronning brings skill and playoff experience to the 4th line.
Extractions: The Islanders have outscored their guests 14-5 in these three games, and only a herculean effort from Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo kept the first of these home games close. In the three home contests since, the Isles rolled over the Toronto Maple Leafs (aka Public Enemy #2 in Islander country, these days) 5-2, and the rebuilding Pittsburgh Penguins 7-2. They lost some momentum with their 4-0 loss to the Devils at the Coliseum on Tuesday night, but at this point that should be considered an aberration. While the Islanders have enjoyed some modest successes in the previous two seasons, one thing the team has failed to do is make the Nassau Coliseum an exceedingly tough building for a visiting team to leave after a night's work with a point or two in their collective pocket. If the Isles are to leap from the middle of the pack to the upper tier of the league, this sort of home cookin' will go a long way toward getting them there. He was a warrior and fan favorite for the better part of seven seasons on Long Island. However, with the emergence of Eric Godard as both a heavyweight hockey pugilist and a decent hockey player, plus several talented young forwards ready to crack the lineup (like Justin Papineau, Sean Bergenheim, Trent Hunter and the injured Matthias Weindhandl), Steve Webb became the odd man out and was not offered a contract over the summer. It was not until after the start of the season that Webb landed on his skates in the Philadelphia Flyers system. However, unlike his stay with the Isles that was measured in years, Webb's time with the Flyer organization can be measured in days as he was claimed off of waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins late last week.

While everyone talks football and baseball playoffs, the NHL drops the opening puck on its 2003-2004 season tonight. That's right. It's time for another glorious season of the sport that no one follows until the playoffs, no one watches on the television and no one except Canadians care about. But with 30 different teams in the NHL, including stops in such hockey hotbeds as Phoenix, Ariz. and Columbus, Ohio, we figured it might be a good idea to check things out, before the league's crippling labor crisis whittles the league back down to six teams. This is our preview. The top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs. The Eastern Conference This is an ad. #1. Ottawa Senators The Sens came within a game of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. In 2004, anything less than the Cup will be deemed a failure. After all, this is a team that finished third in team scoring last year. And this is also a team that plays overly defensive hockey. So this is a team that is a pretty good team. #2.
