Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Many of David Aebischer's Swiss countrymen, stubbornly neutral in many matters, decisively told him he was nuts. By Swiss standards, the young Aebischer was making great money to play for Gotteron-Fribourg, his hometown team in the Swiss Elite Leage. But the goaltender walked away from it to take a shot at reaching the NHL. In 1997, Swiss didn't do that. They didn't fill in all holes in Swiss cheese, ban tourists from Lake Geneva or calibrate Swiss timepieces to run three minutes fast per hour. And they didn't dare come to North America to play hockey. Soon, Aebischer was in Upper Marlboro, Md., playing for an East Coast Hockey League expansion franchise, the Chesapeake Icebreakers. And for this, Aebischer had left home? Briefly, he considered returning to Switzerland. "I told myself, 'I can't go back, because then the people who said I can't do it will be right,"' Aebischer, 26, said after an Avalanche practice last week. Nearly seven years after beginning his North American career, Aebischer this season has been everything the Avalanche could have hoped as the retired Patrick Roy's successor. Two days before Tuesday's NHL trading deadline, any talk about the Avalanche making a deal for a big-name goaltender, or about Aebischer as a potential playoff Achilles' heel, involves his lack of a postseason track record, not doubts raised by his regular-season performance.

Extractions: The tournament is set up so that all teams play at least two games. The winners of the first game go into one pool and the losers into another, and from then they play two or three knock-out rounds (depending on how many teams are in the division). The finals were all played last Saturday, and the number of games going to extra time or won by one goal is proof of the effort the kids put out. Losing teams usually play informal friendly games or tournaments among themselves. As a proud mum I have to tell you that my son's team made the Division three Pee-wee (12-13 years) final, losing 6-5 in O/T (five skaters and no goalie - shots to be taken from inside the blue line - brutal) and my daughter's team won the Division one Atom (10-11 years) 3-1. So she is for the moment a member of the best atom team in Calgary!

The Detroit Red Wings caught fire in the second half to finish eight points better than the St. Louis Blues. The Nashville Predators continued their slow rise toward becoming a playoff team and the Chicago Blackhawks sank further in both the standings and attendance. And the first year Columbus Blue Jackets surprised everyone by garnering 71 points, more than seven other teams and enough to tie Chicago, who only had a 75-season head start. But while you could say Columbus and Nashville had good seasons, the other three teams finished on a bad note. (No pun intended, Blues fans.) After bumbling another coaching change, the Blackhawks finished under .500 for the fifth straight season. The Red Wings were shocked by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs, this despite winning the first two games of the series. And though the Blues made it past the San Jose Sharks (for a change) in the first round and stunningly swept the Dallas Stars in the second round, they ran out of gas and goaltending in the semifinals against the eventual champions, the Colorado Avalanche.

Extractions: National Teams Men's World Championship Preview The 2001 World Championship is more than just another international hockey tournament. Most countries are using it as a testing ground for prospects for the 2002 Winter Olympics Thirteen of the 16 nations competing in Hannover, Cologne and Nuremberg Germany, April 28-May 13, also have qualified for the Olympic tourney. Only Italy, Japan and Norway will not be there. Wayne Gretzky, executive director of Canada's 2002 Olympic team, has assigned the task of gathering players for Canada's World Championship team to former Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames' star Lanny McDonald. And McDonald is placing a lot of emphasis on youth by naming Boston Bruins' center Joe Thornton, 21, to the team along with center Vincent Lecavalier and left winger Brad Richards of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Teams must declare a roster by midnight the night before the tournament starts, but can leave spots open for the additions of players who might become avalaible when their teams are eliminated from the NHL playoffs. In addition, the four teams that qualify for the world tournament semifinals are allowed to add five players to their 23-man rosters at that time.
