Many (*) are former Clarkson students I taught in 1993-94; some are Clarksonians I met while teaching there; some I met only after leaving Clarkson. Some have retired from professional hockey; some never played in the pros. In following the Golden Knights after college, I've been able to meet some of their teammates. # 29 Josh Bartell D Josh graduated in 1996 and is an admissions counsellor at Clarkson. He has volunteer-coached the Knights and does an outstanding job as radio color commentator for their games. He and his lovely wife Margaret have three beautiful boys. My guess is they'll all be Knights some day. # 9 Hugo Belanger LW Hugo has had an extremely long and distinguished career in both ice and roller hockey. He is currently with the Birmingham Bulls of the ECHL. He was player/coach of the Ft Wayne, Indiana Komets of the IHL. He has a two-way contract with the Phoenix Mustangs of the WCHL and was a WCHL all-star and WCHL MVP for 1999. He plays roller hockey in the summers for the Virginia Vultures of the MLRH. He formerly played for the now-defunct Long Island Jawz of the RHI. He is the highest-scoring player in RHI history. # 34 Chris "Barnyard" Bernard G The Yard graduated in 1998, majoring in technical communcations, and has played for Binghamton, Mohawk Valley, and the Missouri River Otters of the UHL, Columbus and Fayetteville of the CHL, Roanoke of the ECHL, and Philadelphia of the AHL. He has the highest win% in NCAA history and was CHL goalie of the week in November 1998. He retired from hockey at the end of the 1999-2000 season. GO YARD!

Extractions: ORONO, MaineChris Heisten (Anchorage, Alaska) scored with 1:05 remaining in regulation as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears are 3-1-1 with the tie while Western Michigan goes to 2-3-1. The Broncos struck first, just 2:53 into the tilt, when Pat Dwyer (Great Falls, Mont.) and Brent Walton (Elmira, Ontario) teamed up to find Paul Davies (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) on an odd man rush on the power play. Davies beat UMaine netminder Frank Doyle (Guelph, Ontario) for his second goal of the season. The Black Bears answered back just over two and a half minutes later when Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) scored his fourth power play goal, and fifth overall, with a blast from the high slot. Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) found Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) with the puck and he gave to Shields. It was the first tie in a game that saw four ties and four lead changes. The Black Bears took their first and only lead of the day late in the first period when Kariya won a faceoff in the Western Michigan zone to Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec), who ripped a shot from the blueline at 19:18. The Black Bears held the lead the majority of the second period. Western Michigan had several great chances to get the equalizer midway through the period when it had a five-on-three advantage for 1:44, but several outstanding defensive plays from Troy Barnes (Pembroke, Ontario) and Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) and excellent netminding by Doyle kept the score 2-1. The Broncos did however get the tying goal at 16:46 when Reid Yantzi (Tavistock, Ontario) found Dana Lattery (Cochrane, Alberta) who was able beat Doyle.

The Black Bears advance to the title game of the tournament to be held at TECO Arena on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Clarkson took the early lead against Maine when freshman Mike Nagai took a perfect centering pass from senior Don Smith and knocked in his own rebound at 4:45 of the first for his second goal of the season. Maine got on the scoreboard when it took advantage of its third straight power play opportunity with a man-advantage marker at 15:58 from Martin Kariya. Robert Liscak put the Black Bears ahead at 5:53 of the second period. Francis Nault scored his first collegiate goal at 9:04 of the third period to push the cushion to 3-1. Just 73 seconds later, sophomore Kevin O'Flaherty made it a one-goal game converting on a rebound opportunity at the top of the crease. With just 34.3 seconds remaining, Dan Kerluke sealed the victory for Maine with an empty net goal for the final 4-2 score.

In addition, I also look after the US high school and the US junior leagues as well as the Western US colleges. Combined with Shane Churla and Vaughn Karpan, we try to cover the Western area of North America. Question: Is there a different style of play between the Ontario Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League?

Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Nov. 8, 2000 - Established NHL teams such as the Colorado Avalanche are just wild about playing expansion clubs. It usually means a chance to take an easy two points, and get a look at some cool new uniforms in the process. Tuesday was such a night for the Avs, who shut out the forest greenclad Minnesota Wild 2-0 at the Pepsi Center. So far, three of the Avs' 11 wins this season have come against first-year Minnesota and Columbus. This was the first meeting for the Avs against their new Northwest Division rivals, with four other meetings still to be played. Goals by Joe Sakic and Minnesota native Shjon Podein got the Avs their second straight win, and Patrick Roy had to make some difficult saves among his 23 in getting career shutout No. 49. Despite a brief layoff and a day that started at the Arapahoe County courthouse, Roy appeared highly in sync. "I felt awesome out there," Roy said. "It was great to have those four days, and today I was really focused. Hopefully it will be the same way against the Blues Thursday night." The Avalanche badly outshot the Wild in the first period, 14-4, but none of them was a high-quality scoring chance. Former St. Louis Blues (and Denver Grizzlies) goalie Jamie McLennan looked sharp, however, and visions of another Sean Burke-style performance of last week against the Avs were starting to form.

The Wildcats held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. The first nine minutes of the second period were very similar to the end of the first, with both teams holding their ground defensively. Brian Yandle broke the 30-minute scoring drought with a power-play goal at 8:59. Yandle's first collegiate goal beat Traylen high clove side after a feed from Gare. Both teams had many scoring chances throughout the rest of the period, but neither team was able to capitalize. The period ended with Clarkson on a power play, but UNH was able to hold on to its 2-0 advantage.
