Sports By University Communications Published: Monday, August 26, 2002 Media Credit: University Communications [Click to enlarge] In the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Clarkson University Hockey is considered among the elite programs in the league. Since the conference's inception in 1962, the Golden Knights have been a dominant force having won nine ECAC regular season titles and four league tournament championships. With 19 lettermen returning from last year's squad, which placed second in the league, and another strong recruiting class coming to campus, Clarkson should once again be challenging for top honors in the ECAC. The Green and Gold, however, would like to lift their play to the next level in the 2002-03 campaign and take advantage of the new NCAA 16-team format and qualify for the national tournament after a three-year absence. Guided by head coach Mark Morris, who enters his 15 year, the Knights will look to improve upon their 17-15-6 overall record and 11-6-5 ECAC mark from last season. The Knights, who will be led by senior co-captains Kevin O'Flaherty and Dave Reid along with senior assistant captain Chris Bahen, will have plenty of tradition to live up to has they enter their 81season of play. "Kevin, Dave and Chris will provide the type of leadership in the locker room and away from the rink that is essential to building a tightly knit team that is focused and committed to winning," remarks Morris.

Sports By University Comm. Published: Monday, April 15, 2002 The 2001-02 Clarkson University Hockey team was honored at the annual Knight Club Booster Awards Banquet on April 13. Family, friends, and booster club members paid tribute to the Golden Knights for another successful season. Captains for the 2002-03 season were also announced along with the incoming recruits. The Knights, under the direction of 14th-year head coach Mark Morris and assistants Ron Fogarty and Brad Dexter, placed second in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) with an 11-6-6 league mark and posted their 27th consecutive winning season overall with a 17-15-6 record. Sand Lake, New York native, David Evans received the Fran Neragin Award. Named in honor of the loyal Clarkson hockey booster, who passed away in 1984, the Neragin award is presented to a player who excels in sportsmanship and academics, and who has contributed significantly to the Clarkson hockey program. A top student majoring in Bio-Molecular Science, the senior center scored 11 goals and12 assist for 23 points through 36 games. Evans tallied his first career hat trick to lead Clarkson to the 6-1 victory over St. Lawrence in the second game of the ECAC Quarterfinals. An assistant captain for the Green and Gold, defenseman Ian Manzano was honored with the Paul J. Pilon Award. The Pilon Award was established in the memory of the former Clarkson hockey player who died in a tragic car wreck in 1937. It is presented when appropriate to the senior, who has excelled both as a student and hockey player. A grad student working towards his MBA, the Dorval, Quebec native battled back from a nagging back injury the previous two years to help solidify the Clarkson defense. Playing in all 38 games Manzano scored 11 points (3-8) Clarkson University Hockey.

Down 3-0 late in the second period, Princeton climbed with a goal as Chris Owen scored twice in 23 seconds but Princeton could draw even in the third period. Neither team could break through offensively in the first period as Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux and Clarkson netminder Mike Walsh kept the game scoreless. Leroux made 13 saves in the period and Walsh stopped six shots. Clarkson was able to get on the board first, scoring twice in a span of 12 seconds to take a 2-0 lead in the second period. First at 6:23, Kevin O'Flaherty scored on the rebound of a Dave Reid shot to make it 1-0, then Reid scored through a screen to make the score 2-0. Rob McFeeters assisted on the first goal and Adam Campana set up the second. Clarkson extended its lead to three goals at 14:06 when Randy Jones skated in from the point and beat Leroux with a wrist shot through a screen. Trevor Edwards fed Jones from behind the net.

Extractions: Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins. This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick. Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.
