Extractions: Despite outshooting Boston University, 31-26, Northeastern couldn't find a chink in Terrier goalie Sean Fields armor and were shut out, 4-0, in front of 4120 spectators in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena. "Sean Fields played great," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "I thought our guys played better as the game went on, but we just couldn't get the puck past him." The Huskies (6-9-2, 1-7-1 HEA) outshot the 11th-ranked Terriers (12-6-2, 6-4 HEA), 26-13, over the final two periods and went 0-for-5 on the power play. After each team weathered a first period power play, BU defensman Jekabs Redlihs shovelled the puck to an open Brian Collins in front of the net and Collins knocked it under Husky goalie Keni Gibson eight minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. The teams traded shots for the next several minutes of play. BU's Frantisek Skladany got the puck from a ricochet off the glass in the 11th minute of play, but his wide open shot rang off the post. Husky freshman Mike Morris had a great opportunity a few minutes later as he took a point-blank shot in front of the BU goal but Fields blocked it. The Terriers took a 2-0 advantage at 16:12 when BU's Mark Mullen's shot was deflected by Gibson and went to a wide open David VanderGulik, who was able to find the net as Gibson was out of position. BU held the 2-0 difference for the remainder of the period.

Extractions: The Huskies suffered their second setback in-a-row at the hands of crosstown rival Boston University, 6-1, in Hockey East action in front of 2,562 fans at Walter Brown Arena. Senior captain Mike Ryan rifled in a slap shot from the top of the circle at 15:26 of the second period. The power-play goal snapped the Huskies 99-minute scoreless streak against BU netminder Sean Fields, who shut out NU the previous night with 31 saves for a 4-0 victory. Ryan's goal was his ninth goal against the Terriers in 14 career games. Ryan's goal cut the BU deficit to 4-1, but the Terriers opened up the third period with two goals from Dan Spang and John Sabo, just 17 seconds apart, in the third minute of play to open up the game. There was a sense of deja vu of night before, as the Huskies were outshot, 12-4, in the first period en route to a 2-0 lead. Saturday night, BU outshot NU, 13-5, en route to a 2-0 advantage. "You don't want to go through six periods and score two goals," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We're done with our non-league schedule and we have to get better. We had 14 freshmen and sophomores in the line-up and we did see some good things. We'll continue to make improvements and we'll be better in February than we are now."

Extractions: Home News Born in the U.S.A. - mostly We are immensely proud that both Mark and Marty both played in the World Hockey Association and the NHL. Mark played 22 seasons and now serves as the pro scout for the Detroit Red Wings. Marty played 12 seasons in the WHA and NHL and has tried his hand at coaching. Today one of every six NHL players is American, but when Marty and Mark started playing pro hockey it was still relatively rare for a U.S-born player to earn his way into a pro lineup. When Gordie broke into the NHL in 1946-47, the only American forward of note was Eveleth, Minnesota native John Mariucci who was one of the toughest men in the game. That may explain why he was able to defy odds and make the NHL. His job was to protect Doug and Max Bentley and he did that job very well. Everyone in the league, including Gordie, admired his toughness. Robbie Ftorek (1972-73 to 1984-85, WHA and NHL): He was difficult to play against, just ask Gordie. He was one of the most competitive players in the WHA. Standing only 5-9, Ftorek wasn't given much opportunity for success in his first foray into the NHL. But the founding of the World Hockey Association opened the door wider and Ftorek rushed in at full speed. The former 1972 U.S. Olympian became a WHA star. He netted 59 goals for the Cincinnati Stingers in 1977-78 and led the WHA in assists with 77 the following season. Mike Modano (1988-89 to present, Minnesota and Dallas). The Michigan native is simply one of the most dynamic skaters in the game. He has transformed himself into a terrific two-way player. He has that championship ring earned with the Dallas Stars. He is one of the most coveted players in the game.
