Click here to visit our archive. Sports fans love to reminisce over the days that it all went wrong: the wasted draft pick, the tragic trade or the defecting hero. These may not be, by definition, the worst roster moves ever made, but they were the ones that affected us on a personal level. These are the events that caused and still cause us to sit on our bar stools and lament the cruel twists of life. After pulling up stakes from a sleepy southern U.S. metropolis in 1980 and landing in a sleepy Canadian cow town at the base of the Rockies, the Flames enjoyed a magnificent first decade in their new home, culminating with a Stanley Cup in 1989. But the Flames havent won a playoff series since. The deal that sent cult hero Theo Fleury to Denver is the one that Flames fans will take to the grave, but history, (not to mention

Extractions: THE HOCKEY PROJECT Home Team Study Player Study Columns ... About Me The Cleanest Players in Hockey In my essay on Normalized Penalty Minutes , I outlined the worst repeat offenders in the history of major league hockey, as well as introducing GOON ratings. GOON statistically identifies players whose job is primarily to intimidate and fight opposition players, and shows which players are far superior at collecting penalties rather than points. What good would it be to simply view the goons if we couldnt see which players followed the rules during their playing days? With that in here is BYNG. BYNG shows which players who took a very small number of penalties in comparison to the number of penalties they were charged with. The formula for BYNG is almost identical to GOON, but is switched around: BYNG = (1 (COPS / NPIM) * 100) Where COPS equals the players Career Offensive Player System score, and NPIM equals the players career Normalized Penalty Minutes. BYNG generates a number that shows how clean the player was. A BYNG of 100 would indicate a player that never took penalties. Well, that player has never existed, but there are some that have come close over the course of their careers.

Extractions: Shoots: Right The former Boston College player returned to Boston when he signed as a free agent on September 13, 1995. The highest scoring American born player in NHL history, is hard working sniper, that paid as much attention to his defensive assignments, as scoring goals. Raised in the tough streets on New York's Hell's Kitchen, Joe and his brother Brian took what they learned playing street hockey, and parlayed it into successful NHL careers. Joe scored 51 goals with Salt Lake City of the IHL in the 80-81 season, and 51 goals with Calgary of the NHL in the 88-89 season, joining Brett Hull as the only players who tallied 50 goals in both the minors and NHL during the decade of the 80's. Joe's season in Boston was plagued by injuries. A serious neck injury took Joe out of the line-up in December, and shortly after his return, a torn ACL sent him to the sidelines for the duration of the campaign. In the off season Joe signed with Pittsburgh as a Free Agent, and in March scored goal number 500 of his career, becoming the first American born player to do so, and along with Jari Kurri, only the second non-Canadian player to score 500 goals in the NHL. Joe will retire as the leading American born scorer in the history of the NHL. On November 13, 2000, Joe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Cavallini Brothers Life after hockey; what does it involve and is it really after hockey? That is the question that I tried to answer while talking with Gino and Paul Cavallini. Do NHL alumni really leave hockey behind once they retire? Do they play in other leagues or get into coaching, or on the opposite end of the spectrum, do they move on to something else that they have always wanted to do and put hockey in the background? After talking with Gino and Paul, I received completely different viewpoints on life after hockey.
