Extractions: Wichita Wind The Wichita Wind joined the C.H.L. for the 1980/81 season. They played for three years in the league before folding after the 1982/83 season. The 1980/81 season was a wild ride for the Wind. Despite coming in 6th place for the regular season, they came back strong in the playoffs. The Wind beat 3rd place Indianapolis in the Quarterfinals then went on to the Semifinals to beat the 1st place Dallas team. The Wind went on to the finals against 2nd place Salt Lake only to lose, what must have been a heartbreaker, 4 games to 3. The third print belongs to a family in Amarillo who was the benefactor of Dareo's generosity. Nolan Ryan This is a Dareo E. Fontaine Glass Portrait of Nolan Ryan. It has been signed by Nolan Ryan (with a diamond pen) right over the Texas in "Texas Rangers". Although "1/500" is etched on the portrait, this is actually one of the prototypes created by Dareo for a marketing campaign that was put on hold. The other glass portrait was given to Nolan Ryan for his disposition. Dareo E. Fontaine

Hall Of Fame Debate, Part 2 - Hall Of Fame Standards of Fame Monitor, I outlined a statistical method for determining the likelihood that a player would/should receive induction into the hockey Hall of moog, andy. http://members.shaw.ca/hbtn/player_study/goalie_monitor.htm
Extractions: THE HOCKEY PROJECT Home Team Study Player Study Columns ... About Me Hall of Fame Monitor - Goaltenders In a previous study, Hall of Fame Monitor , I outlined a statistical method for determining the likelihood that a player would/should receive induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. My monitor inspired a read of the site, Roman Nepomnyaschev, to build his own system for application to goaltenders, and sent it to me. I present the results here, but the work here is completely and totally Romans baby. Like the monitor for position players, the system generates an integer based on the goalers standings in certain key areas. The formula is easy to apply: a) Award 50 points for being the starting goaltender on a Stanley Cup winning team b) Award 25 points for being the starting goaltender on a Stanley Cup runner-up c) Award 20 points for each selection to the All-Star game d) Award 150 points for winning the Calder Trophy e) Award 70 points if the goaltender was runner-up for the Calder f) Award 80 points for being named to the 1 st All-Star Team g) Award 50 points for being named to the 2nd All-Star Team h) Award 70 points for winning the Vezina Trophy i) Award 55 points for being the Vezina Trophy runner-up j) Award 30 points for winning the Jennings Trophy k) Award 20 points for being the Jennings Trophy runner-up l) Award 150 points for winning the Conn Smythe Trophy m) Award 300 points for winning the Lester B. Pearson Trophy

Extractions: Digitally enhanced photo by Al Bello/Allsport A similar scene is being played out in dressing rooms throughout the NHL. The exact number of players who use Sudafed, a nonprescription drug that contains the stimulant pseudoephedrine, in an effort to boost their performance on the ice, is unclear. Two NHL trainers estimate that before a game 20% of the league's players routinely take over-the-counter medications that contain pseudoephedrine, not to combat the sniffles, as the manufacturers intended, but to feel a little buzz. The NHL, however, disputes that figure, saying the percentage of players using drugs such as Sudafed is much lower and that they use them for medicinal purposes only. Montreal right wing Mark Recchi sees no correlation between pseudoephedrine and dirty play but doesn't deny that Sudafed gets him going. "You get a bit of an upper from it," says Recchi, who no longer takes the medication but admits that at one time he used it every 10 or 15 games. "You get pretty wired up. Sometimes it gets you a little emotional on the ice, a little too fired up."
Extractions: By Jim Kernaghan, SLAM! Sports Eddie the Eagle sat across from The Eaglet Tuesday, voicing the stark admission that he didn't want his son to be a goaltender. Nope, said the Toronto Maple Leafs ' starting goalie as he doffed his brand-new pads at Steve McKichan's Future Pro goaltender school, where he registered son Dayn as a forward when the youngster clamoured to play hockey at age 5. Eventually, as surely as sons of many auto racers and lawyers and dentists gravitate toward the old man's line of work, the son wound up following in pop's footsteps. "I kind of wanted him to be a forward," a dripping Belfour said after the pair faced shots from the Detroit Red Wings Jason Williams for an hour. "At home when we played floor hockey in the hall, he'd want to be goalie. He played a game now and then, but eventually he came to the decision he wanted to try it fulltime. And I wasn't going to stop him from trying." Perhaps the fatherly concern was borne of knowing the unique shoals goaltenders encounter. Perhaps, as one of the game's ranking 'keepers, Belfour's fear comparisons are apt to be made.
