Extractions: Portland (2-0-0) took advantage of a T-Bird turnover to get on the board in the first period. Seattle defenseman Cole Simpson failed to clear the puck near the Thunderbirds blueline. Portland's Frazer McLaren knocked the puck to teammate Kyle Bailey who took a shot that was blocked by Thunderbird goalie Kevin Dziaduck. But the rebound came off Dziaduck's pads right to Shane Halifax who slapped it into the back of the net at 12:56. There was no scoring in the second period as neither team could take advantage of a trio of power plays. Seattle's best chance in the period came in the last minute when Steve Goertzen rushed down the right wing, swooped under a defender and fed the puck to Ryan Gibbons in the slot. Gibbons smacked the bouncing puck on goal but Winter Hawks netminder Krister Toews mad a left-leg pad save.

Extractions: The latest big NHL trade was so complicated, even some of the players dealt weren't sure where they were going. Holdout Boston Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren was traded to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday in a three-team deal that sent forward Niklas Sundstrom to the Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins acquired veteran goalie Jeff Hackett from Montreal and young defenseman Jeff Jillson from the Sharks. Canadiens general manager Andre Savard got the Sharks' third-round selection in the 2004 draft, while Boston sent a fourth-round pick in the 2004 draft to San Jose. "I'm in shock," Hackett said after packing his gear. "All I was told was that I was traded to San Jose by Andre, and he wasn't sure if I was staying there, so I was a San Jose Shark again for a brief moment, I guess." McLaren, 25, had 124 points and 370 penalty minutes in 417 career games in seven seasons with the Bruins, but he hasn't played this season. He was hampered by injuries in the previous two seasons, and he told the Bruins he wanted a fresh start elsewhere. The Sharks don't have a contract with McLaren yet, but general manager Dean Lombardi expects to sign him to a long-term deal. San Jose doesn't know when McLaren will be in sufficient condition to play.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Hockey SAN JOSE, Calif. Marc-Andre Bergeron scored two goals in the Edmonton Oilers' fourth consecutive win, 5-2 over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. ADVERTISEMENT The victory moved the Oilers within one point of St. Louis for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Jason Smith scored a short-handed goal to break a 2-2 tie in the second period. He took a drop pass from Mike York and drilled a shot past San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov. Nabokov was sloppy in allowing five goals on 27 shots. In his last 10 games, Nabokov has allowed 31 goals. Nabokov (26-18-8) is playing more than normal since primary backup Vesa Toskala was injured on March 13 against Los Angeles. Cory Cross opened the scoring for the Oilers, taking a pass from George Laraque from behind the net and firing it over Nabokov's shoulder. The Sharks tied it up when Patrick Marleau scored his 28th goal, knocking in a rebound off Oilers goalie Jussi Markkanen. The goal broke Marleau's 10-game scoreless streak. Edmonton retook the lead with 1:56 remaining in the first period when Bergeron put in a one-timer from the left faceoff circle.

After taking a shot off the right ankle, the Bruins left wing hobbled to the bench and grimaced. After a test shift, though, he determined he was fine. ADVERTISEMENT Good thing. It was Samsonov's goal with 13.4 seconds remaining in regulation, with goalie Felix Potvin pulled for an extra attacker, that salvaged a tie for Boston, 5-5, at the FleetCenter. The team still has yet to earn a victory on home ice (0-1-2-1), but coach Mike Sullivan was pleased with the effort that resulted in 52 shots on net. "I thought we played a real good hockey game," said Sullivan. "We executed the way we wanted to play. I thought they battled hard. I think if we have efforts like that, we're going to win a lot of hockey games."

Extractions: Weather Sports Forums Comics ... Movies By DAMIAN CRISTODERO, Times Staff Writer Defenseman Kyle McLaren hasn't played this season and requested a trade. The Lightning apparently has at least a passing interest in disgruntled Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren. It is believed Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster and Boston GM Mike O'Connell have spoken, though nothing appears imminent and there are numerous factors the Lightning would have to consider before a deal could get done. McLaren's agent, Neil Abbott, said Tuesday he could not confirm Tampa Bay's interest but added, "Certainly, Tampa is a great place, and the hockey team is playing super. It's a place any hockey player should take a look at." McLaren, 25, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound restricted free agent, has not played this season and requested a trade after turning down Boston's qualifying offer of $1.755-million, which he made last season. Abbott has said his client is looking for a "change of scenery."

The NHL is holding its Stanley Cup tournament, but I'm holding my nose. Slowly but surely over the years, I have found myself developing a hate-on for the national hard-on for hockey.I speak here as a serious sports fan who believes spectator sports are the last bastion of live TV and that there's no greater thrill than watching men play for make-or-break bundles of cash. I speak as well as a hockey-pool addict who's managed hallelujah to have Doug Gilmour on her list this year. But the graceful sport of lightening-fast moves and spectacular saves is now so completely corrupted by NHL-style brutality and ugliness that it no longer exists. My current antipathy started when millennial celebrants suggested my feelings for Canada ought to be wrapped up in the image of Paul Henderson scoring his goal during the 1972 Canada-Soviet summit series. It got tweaked when fans wanted to give Rocket Richard a state funeral.
