Extractions: And it is not just players Ricci's size (six-foot, 200 pounds) that can't move the duo. When San Jose faces players like Keith Tkachuk, Todd Bertuzzi and others, the NHL's top power forwards have difficulty when they hit the big wall. Scott Thornton can throw a little weight around himself at six-foot-three and 225 pounds and he knows how difficult "Rat" and "Mac" are to play against.

Extractions: Seems like a solid proposal from Tampa, and a good possible trade for the B's. Modin is just a year removed from a 30+ goal season, and has a rediculously hard shot. While Mclaren could stabilize Tampa's defense. Doesn't seem to make as much sense as the proposed Colorado deal, but I'm beginning to think that trade proposal never happened. If I'm O'Connell I'm starting to look very long and hard at the Tampa proposal. As opposed to sitting around and waiting for the perfect deal that is not going to happen."
Extractions: Gaby writes "It is no secret that Kyle Mclaren is on the trading block. However, it seems Mike O'connell is asking too much in return and therefore no team is willing to swap a player in return for the injury plagged defensemen. Here is my humble unbiased opinion on a few deals which the Bruins should explore. Let me know what you think! First of all, even as a Bruins fan I have to admit that a Mclaren for Niinimaa deal would be a complete steal for Boston. Mclaren has never put up the numbers Niinimaa does and it is quite unlikely he ever will. But my question is why does Boston management see the need to acquire a defensemen for Mclaren? O'Donnell, Sweeney, Gill...the three defensive minded veterans...and Boynton, Berard and Girard...three offensively gifted and good skating defensemen. Then why not get a forward to play on the top two lines? I'll tell you why. If Thornton, Samsonov and Murray are the first line, they lack a winger for the second line...Stumpell plays with Mcinnis and Zamuner...or Lapointe...that is week offensively. But by admitting this, O'connell has to live with the fact that Guerin was his to loose and they let him go without any serious attempts of re-signing him.

Extractions: Edmonton Now Generous with Goals Apparently Edmonton hasn't gotten the NHL memo that all teams must be all about defense all the time. Their denfense has been sagging this season . Last season they allowed just 182 goals. This season they've already surrendered 121. It almost makes sense, though. Players want to skate and shoot. They don't want to sit back and guard the blueline. Last season just made them want to see the other side of the rink more. Oh well. Maybe everything is fixed. The Oilers beat LA 2-0 last night Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, January 17, 2003, 08:04 AM Too Many Hats, Not Enough Heads Wow. The National Post has a really nice story on coach/GMs and how it's usually a bad idea. Obviously it covers Toronto's Chief Executive Thug, Pat Quinn. But it gives a nice overview of the failure of GM/coaches in lots of other sports, too.
