Extractions: That the Leafs were slow out of the gate this season can be attributed to many things, but one of the main reasons people point to was the fact that the blueline was missing Bryan McCabe due to a knee injury and was forced to dress the inexperienced Maxim Kondratiev in his place. While the young Russian gave it the old college try, it was clear that he was out of his depth and the Leafs couldn't get #24 back in the lineup soon enough. There is a reason for this. McCabe is, quite simply, the stud of the Maple Leafs defense. Say what you will about Tomas Kaberle or Ken Klee. Both are good rearguards, mind you, but no one swaggers on the Leaf blueline like McCabe. If the former WHLer is going good, it instills confidence throughout the whole team. And when he is going bad, the defense folds in on itself. It wasn't always like this for McCabe. To be sure, the tools have always been there: the ferociously physical hitter, and the booming point shot. However, good judgment has always been lacking. Early in his career he was placed in some fairly awful situations from having to captain the Islanders as a second-year player, to being under the microscope in Vancouver where he was one of the principals involved in the Trevor Linden trade, to being dealt to a struggling Blackhawks team that was going nowhere fast. Not exactly ideal situations in which to develop a defenseman.
Extractions: Training camp is barely underway for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and already there are many questions surrounding the team. Putting aside the obvious dilemma about who to throw out on defense, this week's Leafs report will examine the fragileness of Toronto's lineup, and the implications this might have on their chances for future success. With the additions of Joe Nieuwendyk and Bryan Marchment, Toronto became the oldest team in the NHL. While this is great in terms of experience, the downside of having a bunch of players in the twilight of their careers is they are more susceptible to injuries than younger skaters are. A major key to winning the Stanley Cup is to maintain a healthy lineup, but the games haven't even started for real yet and already the Leafs have an infirmary filled with wounded players. To say the least, this doesn't bode well for the Leafs' Stanley Cup hopes. Bryan McCabe, who has a wonky knee, heads the injury brigade. Coming off a sub-par season, the last thing McCabe needed was to miss training camp, but he hurt his knee while training in the off-season. McCabe showed two years ago that he has all the tools required to become a top-flight NHL defensemen. McCabe expects to be ready to play when the season begins, and with the team's blue-line situation murky enough as it is, the Leafs are praying that his injury doesn't linger throughout the year.
