Extractions: Ask any vendor of Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys which player's number is the most popular after Captain Mats Sundin and he will tell you it's Tie Domi's #28. Quite remarkable, really, on a team that boasts Alexander Mogilny, Gary Roberts, Owen Nolan, and Ed Belfour. One would think that they would occupy spots two through five. All are popular and productive players who have taken their turn playing hero in the last couple years. But still it is the sparkplug winger's tricot that is the second most asked for among the Leaf Nation. But Domi has never really been counted on as a goal scorer anyway so why should his offensive demise spell the end of the road? Indeed, it is true. As many know at one point the veteran flanker was one of the more feared pugilists the NHL had to offer frequently racking up more than 200 minutes in penalties in one season with a career high 365 during the 1997-1998 season. No doubt it was because of this that he became a cult hero in Toronto. Be that as it may, when Quinn took over the team five years ago, he made it clear that the days of holding one spot open on the bench for a player who did nothing but throw down the gloves were over. Domi was given an ultimatum: Develop enough skill to be played 10 minutes a night or go the way of the dinosaur. To his credit, the Windsor, Ontario native hired a personal trainer and stayed after practice to hone what offensive skill he could muster, picking the brains of the likes of Sergei Berezin, Alexander Mogilny, and Mats Sundin in order to improve. Over time, Domi has transformed himself from a five minute a game fighter into a third line agitator and seemed to cement his place in the line-up. So why all this talk about his place in the rotation being in danger?
Extractions: Say what you want about goaltending and defense winning championships, but a good offense still puts fannies in the seats. There will be no exception to that rule in Denver this season, where the Colorado Avalanche have juiced up their offensive engine with the signings of one of the greatest one-two combos in league history, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. This soon-to-be-legendary signing isn't the only sweeping change on the Avalanche roster, however. The greatest goaltender of all-time, Patrick Roy, has retired from the NHL, leaving the Avs with a gaping hole between the pipes. The loss of defensemen Greg de Vries and Bryan Marchment has allotted two spots to newcomers on the Avalanche blue line, one to be filled by former Predator Karlis Skrastins and the other by an ex-reserve from Hershey of the AHL.

Extractions: Right winger Mark Recchi sprained his knee during the practice. An MRI performed today revealed damage to the medial collateral ligament in Recchi's right knee, and the team expects him to miss three to five weeks of action, including the season opener. It is the first knee injury of any kind sustained by the winger in his career. Additionally, a fight broke out during scrimmage between two larger-than-average human beings, Keith Primeau (6'4" 220 lbs.) and Chris McAllister (6'8" 245 lbs.) Evidently, the two players became entangled in the corner and Primeau caught a stick in the throat. He retaliated with an elbow, and so the gloves came off. While Primeau took a couple hard shots to the jaw, McAllister had to be taken to the trainer's room have his hand x-rayed.

Theo Fleury has missed two Blackhawk practices in a row The Blackhawks are not saying if this is related to Fleury's previous substance abuse problems login: laexaminer; password: laexaminer ) (he enterered rehab in 2001). I love Theo Fleury and I think he has the potential to be a great player, and I'm glad the 'Hawks took a chance on him, but this is hardly atypical Fleury behavior. His career is defined by personal drama. He's moody. He misses practices. Coaches force him to miss practices. And no one ever knows why.
