Extractions: ThrashCrash writes " With the offensive future secure after claiming the top offensive picks for three years straight in the draft, the Thrashers have to look at the missing piece of the puzzle: goaltending. Damian Rhodes is a good net minder and has the numbers from Ottawa to prove it. Milan Hnlichka also can stop a puck with the best of them as he did in the world championships last month for the Czech Republic. The problem lies when these two put on Thrashers jerseys and step between the pipes in Phillips Arena. General Manager Don Waddell has been very open about his disappointment in his net minders and his desire to make a change. For the first two seasons, the pressure was not great because Rob Zepp was in the system and was foretold to be "the goalie of the future." Thanks to a flub by Zepp's agent, he went back into the draft this year and was taken by Carolina. The addition of Michael Garnett helps to fill that void and may prove to be better in the long run, but the situation sets back the rescue of Thrasher goaltending by at least 2 or 3 years. The Thrashers face the summer with almost no players signed for the next season. While there are only two unrestricted free agents left on the team following the signing of Jeff Odgers, the core of the team is almost entirely restricted free agents. Ray Ferraro and Chris Tamer are inked, but most of the other defensemen and wingers need new contracts. With the arrival of Danny Heatley, Lubos Bartecko, and possibly Kovalchuck, some of those wingers become excess and you can expect to see GM Waddell shopping them around in an attempt to get a solid net minder.

Extractions: According to the standings, the Aeros are better than the Chicago Wolves this year. But you can throw any and all records aside tonight and the two teams meet for the third time this season. In the past, most games have been close, but this year, the winning team has dominated the game. That may very well be because in both cases the loser was playing their third game in three nights. Tonight, both teams should be well rested as the Aeros have not played since Sunday. Chicago beat Manitoba last night at All State Arena and did have to travel this morning, but that will not be a factor tonight. Norm Maracle will start in goal for the Wolves and did get the win in the Chicago's 6-1 in the Windy City earlier this year. That was after the Aeros beat a bad Cleveland team 8-3 the night before. Keys to this one, as always, is to stay out of the penalty box. The Aeros cannot spend any time on the penalty kill. In fact, I challenge them to play a penalty-free hockey game. And of course, they need to score first and not allow any goals in the first period.

UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (06/08/97) Worcester IceCats defenseman Jamie Rivers and Adirondack Red Wings goalie norm maracle. the 21 Ukrainians who saw action in the American hockey League s 1996 http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1997/239721.shtml
Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach News in the AHL Midway through last summer, Greg Gilbert was content to get on with his life after hockey. His ailing back not responding to treatment, Gilbert was forced to retire after 15 NHL seasons. "I was trying to deal with my body telling me I couldn't play anymore," the 35-year-old Gilbert said. "I wanted to get some normalcy to my life." But then Mike Keenan called and wondered if Gilbert wanted to coach the St. Louis Blues' American League affiliate, the Worcester IceCats. Keenan is no longer employed as the Blues' coach-GM, but he definitely knew coaching potential. Gilbert guided the IceCats to a franchise-record 43-win, 100-point season and the New England Division championship with a roster of undistinguished players. For this accomplishment he was voted winner of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as AHL coach of the year in voting by media members. In other league news, J.F. Labbe of the Hershey Bears became just the fifth goalie in AHL history to be voted MVP and the first since Pelle Lindbergh of the Maine Mariners in 1980-1981. Labbe led the AHL in goals-against average (2.52) and shutouts (6) while posting a 34-22-9 record for the Bears. He tied for first in wins. The writers and broadcasters also voted him winner of the Bastien Award as the best goalie. The Philadelphia Phantoms and Hershey not only dominated in the standings as the AHL's only 100-point teams, they also filled the all-star teams.

His cell phone was turned off for a period of time so I had no way to contact him. I just wanted to know how he's doing and how he's playing. Extractions: ATLANTA (AP) Goalie Norm Maracle was one of 18 players cut by the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday and reassigned to Orlando of the IHL. Maracle reported to training camp out of shape last year, underachieved in his first season and then reported to camp this year at 12 pounds over his target weight. "I still think Norm Maracle, skill-wise, is a goaltender capable of playing in the NHL,'' Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said. "But until he makes a commitment to himself and to us, we're not going to provide him with another opportunity, like we did last year.'' Maracle could be claimed in the waiver draft in two weeks. Milan Hnilicka, Scott Fankhouser and Scott Langkow are still competing for the backup job behind Damian Rhodes. The team also has talked with unrestricted free agent Mikhail Shtalenkov. : Thrashers cut goalie Norm Maracle : 11:53 am ET, Sun, Sep 17, 2000 : : ATLANTA (AP) Goalie Norm Maracle was one of 18 players cut by the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday and reassigned to Orlando of the IHL. : Maracle reported to training camp out of shape last year, underachieved in his first season and then reported to camp this year at 12 pounds over his target weight. : "I still think Norm Maracle, skill-wise, is a goaltender capable of playing in the NHL,'' Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said.
